Pros

Genentech is a great company that offers high performing employees opportunities to develop new skills. There are always opportunities for lateral moves. The people are incredibly smart and collaborative, creating a healthy work environment where employees are treated well and feel valued. The benefits are also hard to beat.

Cons

Due to a reorganization back in 2018, it has become very challenging to get people management experience. Also, it can be difficult to get promoted as there is a lot of internal competition for any Team Lead or Director level role, which is very discouraging for the pool of experienced and high performing Senior Managers.

Pros

Benefits are pretty great but not as great compared to large tech companies in the Bay Area. Focus on patients.

Cons

People cannot provide constructive feedback. Feedback is either completely destructive or non existent. Leadership lack vision and the ability to make decisions bc of the layers of hierarchy and analysis paralysis. Most people managers aren’t in those positions based on experience and/or potential but because they outlasted others. It’s so decentralized, you spend most of your day talking to 20 people to find the next 20 with some piece of the information you need. There’s a complete lack of process or efficient operations. The average tenure is 10+ years and not in a good way. People get comfortable and find ways to coast because they have institutional knowledge and that’s their currency. OR they’re completely overworked and scared that their group will go through “transformation”. The company talks about its commitment to diversity but won’t commit to hiring diverse talent. Genentech leans into hiring many contractors who work just as hard as full time blue badge employees and can’t get converted for years. There aren’t that many entry level talent. Why?

Pros

Great perks at the company, Great Events, Great colleagues, Decent Pay

Cons

USDS (now USPS) has the most incompetent bunch of Leadership team. The people in Director level have had no experience or qualifications; except that they were hired on the basis of favoritism, bias and Caucasian race/ American background. The leadership is extremely biased and will promote their friends/ favorites. They steal the limelight from others, snatch opportunities from individuals who are well-deserving and basically are full of jealousy and insecurities.
