Pros

The benefits are good and salary is competitive. In my experience, the people are generally smart, professional, and great to work with. Now that Genentech has formally merged with Roche, there are opportunities for international work assignments.

Cons

The other side of merging with Roche is that the company has gotten a lot bigger and is ironing out what the new global company looks like. Lots of changes going on to react to the market, which is to be expected.

Pros

Benefits. Laid back environment. LIfe/Work balance and flexibility best I've seen anywhere. Employees (salaries/benefits) treated very well.

Cons

Environment is unique in good and bad ways. Very cliquey. Cross-communication not up to snuff. A lot of little pockets seemingly separate that make up the whole. Semi-arrogant air in that most people have an air of entitlement.

Pros

Great salary and benefits. There is interesting work and opportunities to get to know and understand many aspects of the biotech industry. Sabbaticals and holiday vacation / time off is a great benefit.

Cons

Work activities are narrowly focused. You get a lot of great experience but it is often only within a narrowly defined area. Moving between other groups and organizations is very difficult. That is why many people stay within the same group for years. Senior management is focused on reducing headcount in South San Francisco. This is after they eliminated employees at their Nutley NJ and Palo Alto sites. This company is very much apart of the Roche group in that all the major decisions are made in Basel. I think Genentech's best days are over. Given recent failures, the pressure to reduce expenses will only increase.
