Pros

Great benefits, excellent medical coverage, cool perks, respected industry leader, tons of intelligent colleagues, optimism is celebrated, 6 week sabbatical after 6 years tenure. If you work for the company for a lifetime, you can go far... but you will go faster and further at a smaller company

Cons

Cultish devotion to company is encouraged, promotions and opportunities are distributed corresponding to leadership favorites, there's a lot of backstabbing, and perceptions of your peers are given more weight than your actual accomplishments. If you aren't picked to work on an opportunity, you won't be recognized for your accomplishments. New employees are paid at a higher rate than experienced counterparts. The cost of living raises do not reflect the actual cost of living increases, therefore, you are making less money the longer you work there. You are paid below industry standards, so you will have a hard time explaining that in new interviews. You can not voice a perspective that conflicts with leadership or you will be punished.

Lots of Politics and burnout

Pros

It is a great company name to have on your resume for when you go somewhere else and the cafeterias are nice if you ever have a moment outside of meetings. The pay is relatively high as well. There seems to be a real commitment to environmental responsibility.

Cons

Too many meetings, too much bureaucracy and a lot of politics. One would think that in a company as well established as Genentech that the processes would be relatively well established and streamlined. Instead, it is a bloated bureaucracy with lots of emphasis on political fiefdoms where no one is the decision maker and no consensus can be achieved. Major milestones and timelines are missed due to the inability to decide on a specific direction and teams have to parallel track multiple options at the same time. If you are am employee who simply wants to work hard and do a good job, this is not the place for you. If you like politics and trying to show other people up, you will thrive.

Pros

Strong company with a strong and growing future, solid leadership in most areas, good benefits and competitive compensation. Great perks known by the Bay Area's top companies.

Cons

Has lost a noticeable amount of the Bay Area fast company feel and culture over the last few year largely due to being integrated into large pharma thinking and practices. Can be difficult to get things done, especially in a global setting. Employee Performance review process and related compensation awards out dated and does not necessarily consistently reward strong performance (ratings a based on a distribution curve).
