Pros

The facility has decent equipment.

Cons

If you're thinking about working at Genentech Hillsboro, especially as an hourly employee or third-party vendor, run the other direction. This site has a disturbing culture where you're pressured-sometimes outright forced-to work overtime without pay, in direct violation of labor laws and their own policies. Breaks? Good luck. You're expected to power through long shifts with no rest and no compensation, and if you say no, you're punished or made out to be the problem. Despite being hourly, you're treated like salaried staff-expected to stay late, work weekends and be "flexible"-with zero additional compensation. Management knows it's happening. It's not an accident. It's baked into the way this site operates. There is a silent expectation here: work for free, or you're not a team player. If you're looking for a place that respects your time, pays you fairly and follows basic labor laws, this isn't it.

Pros

Incredible pay and benefits Incredibly smart community of scientists

Cons

My first 3 years were incredible in gRED (the R&D side of Genentech). However the last 3 years have been a series of reorganizations in gRED and the end is nowhere in sight. Layoffs occur regularly and are always looming. It's understandable that changes need to be made because many of our blockbuster drugs have lost exclusivity and we don't have replacements to generate the lost profits (many recent phase 3 failures). However the eternal reorg/layoff cycle is soul crushing after 3 years.

Pros

Nicest colleagues you'll ever work with

Cons

The nicest colleagues you'll ever meet have zero power or influence but compensation package is good enough keep them quiet and complicit Backtrack on DEI means eliminating of many excellent groups that have existed for >10 years that have direct impact on elimination of the gaps in pay inequality Long-term employees have drunk the Kool-Aid and nods to whatever the executive committee says The mission of drugs to patients is a euphemism of patients are money for this company
