Pros

Many opportunities for specialization, career longevity.

Cons

I work long hours for little gain, overtime is frowned upon, and my obligations to my family are often sacrificed to put extra effort into non value added tasks on weekends and holidays.

Pros

Some wonderful people work here. Some of the most experienced/intelligent engineers in the industry. Opportunities to excel but requires a forceful hand.

Cons

Culture is terrible. Employees are unhappy. People are only there for the paycheck. Most would leave if other opportunities in the area existed. Core hours. Antiquated processes/systems. Management lacks true leadership. Brilliant people who would make great leaders refuse to take a management roles and choose to stay technical due to the terrible managerial systems/people in place.

Pros

Pays weekend overtime, at straight or half time, when you are forced to work Salary has a decent 401(k) plan 100% match for first 4%, 50 match for next 2%

Cons

Within BIW salary compared to other employees: *No Pension if you are salary, majority of employees get pensions *Highest payroll deductions for similar health insurance plans *Highest deductible for health insurance *Only 1 choice for health insurance, other employees have multiple choices *BIW is currently only giving yearly bonuses, no raises for most employees **Salary bonuses are the lowest amounts for bonuses *Lowest amount of vacation accrual for salary employees *Forced overtime for security and salary, everyone else has voluntary overtime *BIW offers no flexibility in work schedules, core hours 7-3:30 you must either work, use vacation/sick time. But most everyone starts before 6am. No benefit to the employee working extra hours during the week *Salary weekend overtime paid either at straight time or half time. Everyone else gets either time & half or double time *Except for base pay, salary has the worst benefits, worst schedule flexibility, longest hours, fewest job movement opportunities, worst health insurance, lowest amount of vacation time. If injured in or out work, salary has to return to work within 6 months, most everyone can be out of work equal to their length of service, with a 7 year max.
