Pros

I joined Genworth soon after graduating college and entered their Leadership Development Program in IT. It gave me a great opportunity to try out different roles in IT and find out what I was most passionate about...and I also got the chance to live in different cities (and countries).

Cons

This company just seems doomed to fail. They re-orged recently, and while they gave the appearance of trying to find a new CIO for Insurance & Wealth Management, they ended up just sticking with the same guy. There are never enough people to do the work in IT...and developers are always stretched across multiple projects. For every full-time employee in a development/programming role, there are probably 20-30 offshore contractors. Problem is, there's a shortage of IT people in Richmond, and it is nearly impossible for Genworth to hire good talent considering their reputation in the area.

Work/Life balance is great. Flex schedule is pretty common. Benefits are great. People are friendly and smart

Cons

Fear of layoffs, unclear sense of direction from upper management, and a little bit too much red tape at times

Pros

There is a strong culture of encouraging advancement and growth. There are always training opportunities to take advantage of, and the education allowance can make getting additional education possible (though it's through reimbursement, so it's not as simple as "free school"). Beyond that, management at every level, and especially at the higher levels, genuinely cares about the employees. The company also does a lot for the community through sponsoring events, charity drives, and encouraging employee volunteer work.

Cons

However, and this is a huge however, if you start out in any sort of lower level, then while you CAN move up (and can do so fairly rapidly), your salary will never match market rates because of the caps they place on raises and promotions. Salary increases, even for top performers, are capped at very low levels, and salary increases with promotions are based off of previous salary, not market rates.
