Not much research. Emphasis on contracts.

Pros

Good benefits, flexible schedules, very few meetings. If you are lucky to be in the right group you can find interesting work.

Cons

Very high overheads with the result small and moderate businesses are winning out competing contracts especially BAAs. Self-patronizing management with no long-term vision. When the going was good with DoD contracts, hired lot of people. Now they are facing some tough times and several people have either left on their own or not finding enough work. Practically no innovation but lot of self-complacency that they are among the best (which they are not -- compare patents and awards at Lincoln Labs or JPL in comparison with GTRI). Too much emphasis on contract development and fund-rising.

Pros

Doing advanced work. Able to get help from many individuals. Well-respected employer. Feel like I am actually doing something worthwhile and useful.

Cons

Sometimes, the lab seems to be a bit anti-social. Most people leave their office doors open, but always have headphones on. No one really seems to leave their desks that often.

Interesting work, but culture is TOO laid back

Pros

- very smart and friendly employees - your work is often on the cutting edge and/or has never been tried before - flexible schedules -lots of vacation time

Cons

-pay is good enough starting out, but forget about raises above inflation level -a general lack of urgency in completing work (I guess that may be a plus for some) -people are coasting on the all of the DOD work that comes in and there's a general lack of interest in diversifying -the promotion structure is extremely rigid
