Pros

The DC office is really nice, people are mostly polite. It's cool to work with people who are well-regarded experts in their fields.

Cons

Within a few months of hire, my entire team turned over, and then only a few months after that the entire team turned over again. Can't speak to other parts of the org, though I know there were multiple layoffs in other departments, but the one I was in was pretty tough. There was also reassurance from the top that positions would not be made redundant and it felt like the layoffs were done in a very hush-hush manner so as not to hurt morale. It would be very difficult for me to recommend anyone works here given my experience.

Pros

Generally nice and knowledgeable colleagues willing to go above & beyond to achieve results and driven by the mission.

Cons

Leadership is disconnect, nepotic, a highly dysfunctional organization at times very toxic culture. Delusions of grandeur about what the organization is. While the organization affords itself a very expensive and overblown executive & leadership team, the programs and offices need to justify hiring support staff or seek external funding to do so. Very few staff development opportunities, lots of lip service, and navel-gazing.

Pros

Driven, intelligent, and focused executive team and Director-level staff. They really care about the people they employ and want to make a difference in this world. Lots of travel and long hours on the road, but an incredibly generous 35 hour work week during off peak times and absolutely unmatched benefits and vacation package (22 vacation days per year, nearly unlimited sick time).

Cons

Like all transatlantic think tanks, GMF struggled to find it's place in a 21st century world. With the resurgence of Russia and the rise of populism, GMF has now solidified once again its place in the world of policy and thought leadership.
