Company is in a small town and it shows from the bottom of the organization all the way to the executive level. If you are looking for forward thinking and progressive, this is not the company for you. Also, being in a small town with small town mentality, the politics are thick within this company. Promotions are often not based on what you know but who you play golf with or what you can do to advance your superior's careers. When senior management decides to make changes to staffing, the person who is on his way out simply is reassigned to a newly created position and the new person is moved in to the old persons job. So much salary fat could be trimmed if these folks were just fired.

It's a small company in a small town. If you're near the top of a small professional niche, it's a very isolating position, since there are no peers nearby. Unless the candidate happens to love small-town life, it's a tough company to recruit for. All companies have internal politics, and the ones here take some time to learn, and are related to the ownership structure (Farm Mutual) and governance (agents on the Board). In my mind, the conflict of interest represented in the governance structure is the biggest operational risk this company faces. All of the good things about the stability and conservative nature of management mean that the organization is tough to shift, so at best! Germania will be a somewhat nimble follower of market innovation. This is not the place to be if one wants to be on the cutting edge of P&C product design or innovation. In order to be here and continue to learn one's craft, one has to be a self-starter on self-education. It's also a place with very limited turnover. There's a clear career path upwards, but since there's little churn in the organization it's a slow path, and the politics will present a glass ceiling to you if you don't play them well.
