Growing pains

Pros

Many in the company have a true sense of loyalty to policyholders and care a lot about giving them exceptional customer service. Many employees are salt of the earth types who value honesty and duty. Some of the newer employees from other insurance companies bringing in new ways of thinking that will serve Germania well eventually.

Cons

Strong resistance to change; company doesn't know yet if it wants to be a market player or a little old insurance company of good ole boys insuring other good ol' boys. Lack of innovation in some of its insurance products, which makes them tough to sell. Some people, even in leadership positions, are stuck in the Fifties with attitudes toward racial and gender equality. This might be changing due to the influence of relative new hires.

Overall great workplace

Pros

Competitive compensation, benefits, vacation. Friendly coworkers, management - and perhaps more importantly, management that understands you have a life outside the workplace. They expect you to produce and work hard, but also understand that sometimes life happens. I cannot overstate how much I feel like leadership actually cares about its employees, and how important I think that is in a job. The CEO is on a first-name basis with everyone; everyone knows him and he makes a point of getting to know everyone. Their benefits package goes above and beyond what many employers are willing to give. While many employers are too concerned with their bottom line and shareholders to take care of their employees adequately, that is not the case here. Job-hopping as a method of career advancement is popular (at least in part) because of a lack of promotional opportunities for employees in some companies - in other words, upward mobility in a given company isn't always ideal or as ubiquitous. It's expected in many industries that employees only stick around for 2-3 years before moving elsewhere. However, many of the employees at Germania have been here for a good long while. They want you to stay, and from what I've seen so far, they make it worth your while.

Cons

As other reviews have outlined, this company is a bit behind the times in a variety of ways (which I will err on the side of caution and not outline in detail). However, what I will say is that they are aware of these shortcomings, and are making moves in all directions to change that. They realize that in order to expand and compete in our day and age, they have to get on the same page, whether it be culturally, technologically, or strategically. In the relatively short time I have been there, I have seen great strides by leadership in all of these directions. This last point straddles the line of pro and con. As I have mentioned, there are a lot of changes going on right now - changes I feel are for the better. But as with all changes, especially in a company this size, there are going to be growing pains. Processes and practices will come and go as they learn what works best, and this can certainly be frustrating at times. So, while I feel change is overall for the better, there are bound to be some bumps along the way. In my mind, however, this is understandable and as long as they are listening to employees and striving to improve, it will be a net positive.

Since 1896

Pros

This is an extremely stable and financially responsible insurance company, organized as a Farm Mutual under Texas statute. The corporate culture and company structure allow Germania to be reasoned and long-term in their approach to the insurance market cycle, so there's none of the typical "write it all" followed by "clean out the crap we wrote last year" vacillating that you see with the large stock company P&C insurers. This conservative long-term approach has led to a history of growing the surplus (barring weather extremes - this is Texas after all!) and policies in force at a reasonable and consistent pace. The stability of the company is reinforced by a management team that is focused not only on long-term profit but also on company survivability through managed growth, careful reinsurance purchasing, and thoughtful product expansion. It's a small company in a small town, so there's a lot of emphasis on family and community. The company has been in business since 1896 and has been in the same location for decades.

Cons

It's a small company in a small town. If you're near the top of a small professional niche, it's a very isolating position, since there are no peers nearby. Unless the candidate happens to love small-town life, it's a tough company to recruit for. All companies have internal politics, and the ones here take some time to learn, and are related to the ownership structure (Farm Mutual) and governance (agents on the Board). All of the good things about the stability and conservative nature of management mean that the organization is tough to shift, so at best! Germania will be a somewhat nimble follower of market innovation. This is not the place to be if one wants to be on the cutting edge of P&C product design or innovation. In order to be here and continue to learn one's craft, one has to be a self-starter on self-education. It's also a place with very limited turnover. There's a clear career path upwards, but since there's little churn in the organization it's a very slooooowwww path.
