Pros

I hands-down love my team. It is supportive, collaborative, a genuine joy to work with every day. Without getting too “we’re like a family”-ish, because we do have good healthy boundaries, I genuinely feel like these folks are my friends! They’re also brilliant at their jobs, and getting to learn from them is a privilege.

Cons

It’s had some growing pains over the last few years since getting bought by MSFT and taking on tons of new folks. Cross-company communication is trickier because there’s a lot more of us now. Overall, I’ve noticed happiness varies widely by team. I love my team and most of my reporting chain, and I know others do too. But, I also know of others whose departments sound challenging to work in (and not in a good way). We’re a big company now, so experience varies by team more I guess.

Pros

- Individuals on teams are generally great people to work with. - Everyone is here for their love of open source and software.

Cons

- Sometimes over-reaching leadership and lack of process. - Constant sense of urgency but also sudden changes to plans. - Approach to customer centered design is uneven and cherry picked. - Distrust between leadership and employees, disconnected and out of touch.

Pros

GitHub has evolved considerably over the past year. From solidifying its vision, to exponentially expanding its B2B market presence, to an eventual acquisition by Microsoft. With regards to growth potential, the future has never been brighter. My experience at GitHub has been overwhelmingly positive, and the growth opportunities are abundant. With excellent leadership, numerous development opportunities, and a top-of-the-line benefits package, I can confidently say that I love my job.

Cons

The vast majority of complaints relate to growing pains and management changes. Although none of these have impacted me directly, it is important to note that this is a major turning point in the company’s history.
