Pros

Lots of smart people. Teams work well together, and are motivated to solve challenging problems. Colleagues are willing to help each other and openly share ideas.

Cons

Micromanagement is getting BAD! It is trickling down from leadership to management, and is showing up in ways that hurt how we get work across the line. Lots of toxic behavior displayed from senior leaders without any repercussions. We witness it, but fail to report it out of fear of being pushed out or ignored by HR. In general, there is a growing bias when it comes to how decisions are made. Everyone knows that nepotism is a factor when it comes to who is getting hired and who will get promoted at GitLab. Lots of leaders hire friends from their last company or play favorites based on who they decide they will trust or will go along with whatever they say. Senior leaders are reactive and often chase the next big thing without any thought to long term strategy or team workload. Recent company direction, and decisions around headcount all feel like they are in support of a future sale or in favor of making an acquisition easier. Lots of recent hires joined from well known companies, but often leave GitLab under a year because it is such a mess. Many talented people that have been around for years have finally decided that enough is enough. If they haven’t left by now then they’ve chosen to accept mediocrity, or are actively planning their exit.

Pros

- Really a remote and async company: this is not just for shows - Fair compensation: You have access to different locations and your possible progression on the company - Company lives its values. It's easy for companies to publish values; it's much rarer to actually see them reflected in day-to-day decisions. - Direct management that listens: There's a genuine sense that your voice matters. - Supportive peers and team: Colleagues show up for each other. The culture of collaboration is real, not a performative one. - Good benefits. Both the tangible and intangible benefits go beyond what you'd expect, and they make a meaningful difference. - Work-life balance.: The flexibility to structure your day like a human being is something you don't fully appreciate until you have it.

Cons

- A period of significant change at the upper management level: The company is going through a lot of structural shifts at the moment, which can create some uncertainty.

Pros

GitLab has a strong product and a compelling vision around consolidating the DevOps lifecycle into a single platform. For organizations willing to fully commit to the platform, the value can be significant. The territory structure for sellers was also defined, which gave clear direction on which accounts to prioritize. The remote culture was one of GitLab’s biggest strengths early on, and the company attracted many smart and capable people across the organization. I worked alongside several talented colleagues who were passionate about the product and the mission.

Cons

Over time, the “single application” platform approach appeared to lose some momentum in the market as more organizations shifted toward best-in-breed tooling. This made deals more challenging unless customers were willing to fully rip and replace multiple legacy tools with GitLab. Leadership changes across the executive and sales organizations also had a noticeable impact on the culture. What once felt like a flexible and empowering remote environment gradually shifted toward heavier micromanagement and more internal processes, which sometimes made simple tasks unnecessarily complex. Manager turnover was also a challenge. Several experienced leaders left the organization seemingly all at once, which created inconsistency for sellers and made it harder to maintain continuity within teams. Pipeline generation expectations existed (such as structured prospecting days), but there was often limited direction from leadership on how to effectively approach target accounts. At the same time, the sales engineering team was stretched thin due to a high rep-to-SE ratio, which noticeably slowed deal momentum. Compensation for sales roles also felt below market relative to the workload and expectations, particularly when external hires were brought in at higher compensation levels than tenured high performing internal reps.
