Pros

Most of the employees are great people, really wonderful. Trying their hardest to make the best out of a terrible situation

Cons

Beginning with the Board and the Investor and then senior management, all are much more concerned with covering their butts than making decisions. The board's only job is to agree with the Investor (the government of Abu Dhabi) - I think it is in the job description - telling them how wonderful and smart they are. There is no concern about the company or the employees. They are only concerned with retaining their $300K a year positions, where they get to fly first class (yes, First while all employees fly economy) between New York, Singapore and California and enjoying life. Why make waves, why tell the Investor the truth? They only want to be told what they want to hear. Senior management is terrified of speaking the truth to the Investor or they will be fired. I personally know senior executives that have been fired for expressing a dissenting opinion or trying to tell the truth to employees. Which is understandable when you see the way Abu Dhabi looks at free speech. The Investor spends millions on McKinsey to justify bad decision making and McKinsey laughs all the way to the bank, because the whole idea of Globalfoundries came from them.

Following IBM Microelectronics 2.0 path

Pros

Investor with a long-term horizon (how much longer?). State-of-the-art equipment not a dollar spared on bells & whistles; world class semi experts (few still survived), new Gym on premises – to be named after GM who built it.

Cons

Hall of Fame with names of Malta employees carved in stone looks like Cemetery now – all but few are gone. Pivoting away from bleeding edge nodes doesn’t help with bottom line – former IBM Fabs keep bleeding on the older nodes. IBM Micro 1.0 was rated as the worst foundry by the customers, its legacy R&D failed to deliver manufacturable technology despite numerous claims from CTO and all the equipment purchased and deployed. Serial and useless layoffs – “too many experts” nothing to do with the root cause.

Exempt of leadership

Pros

good (for the moment...) benefits. Acceptable salaries.

Cons

Only consistency with leadership is: if something good happens, the executive will take credit, if something bad, the technicians/engineers will get laid off.
