Pros

While the work hours are long, even in difficult economic times you will be fairly compensated. While the defintion of 'fairly' has changed recently, they are stil ahead of the competition in realizing that they must retain their best people. I If you are aggressive and motivated you will succeed here. At the very least, it is a great place to start a career and looks great on a resume.

Cons

The hours are long. The compensation has decreased. There is not much glory or prestige in finance at the moment.

Pros

Very team oriented culture where one is encouraged to work together to solve problems.

Cons

Very closed and proprietary (and severely outdated) in terms of tools and technologies. Employees (especially senior employees) display an arrogance about working at Goldman and blindly follow any direction without questioning. Despite the talent there's actually very little innovation. Once you get acclimated to the culture and their ways of doing things, you'll lose your ability to think outside the box.

Pros

What are the best reasons to work for Goldman Sachs? More appropriately, What WERE the best reasons to work for Goldman Sachs. Technologist were paid a premium compared to other industries, but that premium is far gone and will not return.

Cons

IT organization is grown too fast and too slow to keep up with smaller firms. IT is not a direct generator of revenue except for a very few divisions (algo trading etc.) Large legacy infrastructure not designed to benefit from current computing cost savings trends. (and don't tell me migrations are easy or cheap or on budget)
