Pros

Unfortunately, I'm having trouble coming up with a single good thing to say about Goodyear. I was relocated and laid-off within a year.

Cons

There is no work / life balance at Goodyear. It's an old boys' club as far as the work culture is concerned. Numerous M&A which has resulted in too many legacy systems creating headaches and problems for nearly every project.

Pros

Strong Brand Name and market share. Stable work environment, low risk of layoff. Lots of room to grow in such a huge organization.

Cons

Contrary to the market at large, if you stay in Goodyear, you will be on a slow track to advancement. Managers actively try to slow down the progress of those beneath them. Creativity is laughed at. Buddies promote each other… No one wants to buy tires, consumers only purchase tires when they have to and are generally unhappy about it and not well informed tire consumers. Market response is similar to commodities. Therefore money inside the company is sparse. New renovations are cheap and trendy. I feel like my desk is in an overly lighted hallway now. Auto manufacturers demand fuel economy to meet govt regulations, but in tire design that compromises traction and tread wear. Initial pay is good, but raises are slow and meager. They steal 3 days of what is presented as vacation and use it during plant shutdown in December. Goodyear tolerates poor management styles, someone upstairs should read The No A55hole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't by Robert I. Sutton

Pros

High-tech complicated work. Even though tires appear simple, they are probably the most complicated common engineering problem I can think of. Rubber doesn't behave nicely like steel, aluminum, or even plastic. The majority of the people here are top of their class from very prestigious schools. For fresh engineers, they will not consider anyone under a 3.5 GPA, even though they adverise for applicants down to 3.0, and you better have Formula SAE experience along with a co-op in rubber, composites, or tires.

Cons

Office is closed between Christmas and New Years, but they are not paid holidays. On top of that they force you to utilize vacation time, meaning you can not take those days unpaid. If I had known 3 out of my 10 vacation days were dictated, I would have negotiated my compensation differently. I consider it a loss of 30% of my vacation. Very annoyed.
