Pros

- Open-minded, inclusive, and kind culture throughout all levels and teams. - You never run out of interesting challenges and growth opportunities. - Pitching ideas, convincing stakeholders, getting senior support, and taking ownership is a very common workflow pattern (even at junior levels). - Everyone is helpful and supportive even if you have never met them before or it would mean a significant time commitment out of their schedules. - Enable, facilitate, or contribute to cutting edge research. - Good Software Engineering solutions are more important than ever because of the growing, large, and successful research and applied output. - As a Software Engineer, your direct input, contributions, and collaborations with Research Engineers, Research Scientists, Program/Product Managers, Leadership, and many other roles is very important and tangibly appreciated. - Numerous and diverse opportunities for career progression while maintaining a perfect and healthy work-life balance. - You surrounded by incredibly talented, smart, and driven people at all times. I learn new things every day. - Learning opportunities via a large amount of training courses at your fingertips even if it is irrelevant for your current role; you can make a case for it. - Very competitive salary.

Cons

- Depending on in which team you are, the amount of information can feel overwhelming at times (e.g. fast-paced research). However, go with direct and honest communication and you'll find everyone is willing to help. - We've grown quite large but the org still functions a little like a startup. This has pros and cons and you will mostly feel the pros but every now and then you'll find yourself thinking "How did that happen?!". :)

Pros

It has the atmosphere of a mission-driven small company with a real community feel, but with all the perks and benefits of working for a big tech company (Google / Alphabet). Amazing gym, food, facilities and colleagues too. There's not much cynicism internally towards the company's goals or leadership, which generally creates a positive, inspiring and optimistic environment to work in. You don't have to be a machine learning expert either, they hire normal software engineers to work on all sorts of projects.

Cons

Not many to speak of, but one common reason people leave is because they are offered a leadership position elsewhere which cannot be matched internally. It's also fairly common for people with leadership experience externally to join DeepMind as individual contributors. This is largely due to the level of talent DeepMind hires in combination with great retention - so progressing into leadership roles is often harder / slower than it might be at other companies. So I'd recommend working for DeepMind for a whole host of reasons, but if you're purely looking for rapid career progression into leadership roles - there's probably companies where you can get that faster.

Pros

There are hundreds of engineers working on a variety of hard technical challenges at DeepMind spanning compilers, accelerators (e.g. GPUs), distributed systems, production services, SRE and more. DeepMind does not require AI/ML knowledge for Software Engineering roles and you can have a lot of impact on ML research projects as a pure SWE at DeepMind.

Cons

There are so many interesting and exciting things to work on that sometimes it is hard to switch off. Having such brilliant colleagues can exacerbate feelings of imposter syndrome. Luckily DeepMind has great opportunities to learn, grow and an established feedback culture to help direct you. The interview process is tough.
