Pros

Guardian Life enjoys a well deserved reputation as a well capitalized mutual life insurance company offering a wide range of retail and employer-sponsored financial products, such as group health, variable annuities, and 401(k) plans. It has a lean home office staff which, by necessity, requires its associates to wear many 'hats,' engage in activities outside their narrow band of expertise, and continue to grow their skill set.

Cons

Guardian hires new talent from the outside rather than developing and promoting talented associates from within, leading to poor morale and suspicion of new initiatives and change. Raises are low and bonuses are allocated to officers only, so in most instances, associates with long-term records of success face career and compensation stagnation that does not reflect their professional growth in taking on new challenges and developing new skill sets.

Pros

High compensation (which I now hear is gone), a fun work environment between rank and file employees and some middle management. There is some opportunity to advance, but unfortunately that is because the smart people leave. Promotions are based on tenure, so as the smart people leave, the remaining ones automatically move up.

Cons

The senior level management are some of the most incompetent people in business. The key accounts department is a joke. Promotions are made based on tenure and favoritism, not merit. The strategy to grow the business reflects a dead industry model in financial services. Therefore, this company will never grow.

Pros

Retirement security - pension plan, reasonable hours, profit sharing/401(k) plan, pleasant co-workers, good location

Cons

No promotions from within, management is disorganized and inconsistent - company is adrift, having brought in senior management from stock companies without a general agent network, to a mutual life insurance company with a STRONG GA network., poor working conditions - old filthy carpets,
