Worst place I ever worked

Pros

Some of the nicest and most helpful ICs ever. Too bad they are severely underpaid and overworked. Gusto has done a good job creating a diverse culture. However they refuse to act in a way that doesn't solely benefits the rich white and male employees exclusively.

Cons

It's hard to decide where to start. First thing would be the terrible management. They form a clique and protect each other so that they can get away with bullying, harassment, lying, and blaming. You'd think with such amazing talent as SMEs and Captains supporting them they would at least appear somewhat competent, but I would risk my life for my amazing Captain and wouldn't move a muscle if my PE was tied to a train track. The PEs and PEPEs are sneaky and shady. Once you meet a goal post they push it out and then use it as an excuse to put even high performers on PIPs. Disgusting. I saw nearly every single top performer get fired or quit in my department. The benefits used to be amazing, but over the last year and a half every time Josh Reeves says we need to "tighten the belt" he is talking about all of the hourly employees and NOT the slew of salaried lazy-heads who come in late and leave early while all of the hourly employees are run like slaves into the ground. And that includes Josh himself. The few actual good management people have already either quit or got let go. If there is any justice in this world then Gusto will pay for the way it treats the working class. But sneaky parasites like Gusto are unfortunately the ones that thrive. There is next to no advancement opportunities, especially if your PE decides they don't like you. Which sucks because until you become salaried the pay is TERRIBLE in most cases 66% of the pay you'd get elsewhere. STAY AWAY FOR YOUR OWN MENTAL HEALTH

Pros

In most teams, you will find decent flexibility and allows for work-life balance. Plenty of benefits, such as healthcare, family planning, and RSU are great. The food in Denver is top-notch.

Cons

The culture at Gusto can be alluring, but underneath it, there are a plethora of issues. Too many expect decision-making to be implemented in a quasi-consensus process, where the supposed company value of "debate and commit" is thrown out the window. Many other reviews have discussed the abrupt changes that have affected hourly employees such as myself. I won't regurgitate the same, but they have plenty of truth. The downfall has been going on for a while, but it accelerated last year. During the layoffs and shortly after, several folks left or were let go under the shadiest of circumstances. We used to have unlimited PTO (with reasonable black-out periods). All gone for hourly folks, in great part due to the many Karens who abused the system and constantly complained, forgetting we are a company that needs to make a profit. We used to have an experienced operations leader who, despite his rough edges, kept implementing bottom-up decisions that improved a slew of metrics. Out the window as well and brushed underneath the rug. The current leadership, fortunately, has vast experience with our entire process but is a far cry from the operational leader we need. It's a shame, really. This company had the potential to be great, but perhaps that was also an illusion. We will have to settle for a highly troubled and, at times, counterproductive culture of whining that worsens things.
