Pros

Respectful environment for people from different cultures and backgrounds, English classes if you don't speak it well, the pay is okay if you're an engineer.

Cons

Non-existent QA processes for features, so when something explodes the PM comes running and demands the issues to be fixed. But there are no acceptance criteria, staging environment, or well-written Jira tickets. The senior engineering staff has this strange practice of blocking your PRs with 'best practices' suggestions just never to go back to it if you've more questions. Also, they will treat you as if you were an expert on the codebase, usually lecturing you about not using 'legacy stuff' without prior context. The tech debt is astronomical, but they insist on using technologies that probably won't solve the use case. It is expected for you to publish on average 10 PRs per month to keep you in the performance green-zone. Why 10? No one knows. Should I deliver 10 even if I'm new to the company? Yes. Can anyone explain to me why is this failing? Guess what, nobody knows or senior staff is not willing to help. The onboarding for engineering is not existent. They have treated me with respect but beyond that, I think it is one of the worst companies I've worked for. If you do Ruby on Rails of course you can get something far better. Expect overwork.

Pros

You get a paycheck I guess.

Cons

Where do I even begin? First off, I want to preface this by saying that I do not consider myself to be some GOAT employee, but I do take my job seriously, I’ve worked hard to be good at what I do, and I consider myself to be an easy-going co-worker who gets along with the vast majority of people. This place is so toxic. Over my 15 year career, I’ve never worked with a more slimy, back-stabbing group of people. I literally lost sleep over the stress this job gave me. I had the esteemed honor to work with the most pretentious, mean-spirited manager you can imagine. I get that some people may read negative reviews and think “it can’t be that bad, they must be overreacting”, and I wish that were true. I know the market is garbage, but PLEASE avoid this place. Especially the retirement org (formerly Guideline, which was acquired by Gusto in Nov 2025). Outside of the horrendous retirement org, the company is run by clueless leaders who think that AI is going to magically make their clunky, ad-filled product better. Everyone is an engineer now I guess. Don’t get me wrong, AI can be an incredible tool and the industry is only moving forward, but Gusto’s mindset here is laughable. There’s so much more I’d like to say, but I’m just going to leave this here and move on with my life. Thank god I found someplace that actually treats people with respect and kindness. A truly novel thought, I know.

Pros

Co workers were nice to work with Positive environment

Cons

Not paid for all work hours. Scam of a payment system. Expected to be available off hours to make various phone calls and be on for “conference calls” every morning. Your phone bill will be $600 a month. Not kidding. You are expected to “check in” with your manager every two hours on shift. you will be micromanaged and will be expected to micromanage others. Not compensated for extensive travel fees and gas. Not quite a pyramid scheme but basically They will tell you there is great work-life balance but there is none. You’ll be strongly encouraged to only hang out with your employees and abandon your social life. Your paychecks will be about $600. No info on your taxes being taken off will be given.
