Pros

You find some of the smartest, hardest working employees in the development department. I’ve learned so much from my peers about working with others and critical thinking.

Cons

When I started working for HCSS, I was hesitant to take the salary offer because it was quite low compared to other companies. Recruiting ultimately convinced me because of the profit sharing percentage. This in combination with unlimited rollover vacation time seemed good enough to compensate for the lower salary. As an employee owned company, we also received part of our shared profit as employee stock that grew as our company did well. It was nice. I felt secure and thought this could be a place that I could work for a long time. Every year we recited a mission, vision value statement which stressed making good lives for the employees. Company culture was something I never believed in but I was starting to. Not anymore. Fast forward to today. The CEO made up his mind to sell the company. Profit sharing bonus is gone, employees stocks are gone, roll over PTO is gone (2 weeks max now). The company did give a small, and I stress small, bump in pay to try and mitigate this but it doesn’t even come close. On top of this, the company is forcing everyone to comeback to the office. There is overwhelming support to continue allowing people, who want to, to work remotely. Also, there is no requirement to be masked or vaccinated or tested to work in the office. People get covid all the time and we actually had an employee die from covid not too long ago. Our productivity has been just as good and expenses very low. I personally save 10 hours a week in commute time. A permanent remote work option is pretty valuable to me, not a complete replacement for the loss in pay but enough to possibly keep me as an employee. The CEO isnt having it. His answer to all the employees is that productivity is not that important and if you don’t like things, maybe HCSS is not the right “fit” for you and you should go elsewhere. Nice.

Pros

HCSS has managed to snatch up some of the hardest working individuals I have ever met in my life. In almost any given department, there is talent that is bending over backwards to ensure things run smoothly and successfully. The people I have engaged with and had the pleasure of meeting are connections that will last me a lifetime.

Cons

HCSS always paid decently, but never great. This was mitigated by things like profit sharing, unlimited PTO rollover, and employee stock programs. However, despite the company being constantly touted as "employee owned", the owner recently decided to sell without any input from the staff as a whole, resulting in the loss of most of these extraneous perks. A salary adjustment was offered to some, but not all, in an attempt to compensate for this loss. The adjustment offered was barely a drop in the bucket compared to the lost benefits. All in all, most people took a large reduction in pay. On top of this the company is insisting on forcing people back into the office. This has thankfully been delayed a bit, but the plan is in place despite everything indicating what we are doing now is working fine. Better than fine. It does not seem to matter that we had record breaking profit two years in a row (due largely to cost reduction), or that many employees have regained hours of their lives not having to commute, or that many have been able to start families and spend time with their newborns that they otherwise would have been unable to do. The company boasts a great work life balance, but rather than opening the campus for people who want a place to go work outside their home, they would rather force everyone back. Record profit? Happier employees? Those are pushed aside for one person's idea of "company culture". When asked if vaccinations or masks will be required, you almost get scoffed at. The latest idea is to offer a section of the building they will basically rope off for anyone who wants to wear a mask, effectively ostracizing you from this "culture". All in all, it comes across that one person's definition of company culture is more important than profit, work life balance, or being smart during a global pandemic. It comes across as just wanting to exert control and then cooking up a means to identify and push aside all the people who don't agree.

Where should I start?

Pros

-The small perks are nice and compensation with profit share is average or above average. -Most of the leadership team have good intentions. -Most employees are helpful towards each other and customers. -The overall work environment is fun.

Cons

-There are dated business processes, lots of long time employees seem to be stuck their ways. They seem to think it’s okay to do business as usual, even though there is a better way. If you want to grow as a company, you better invest in better business processes. -Middle mgmt and supervisors play the smoke and mirror game. - Some of the mgmt lack the right work experience and personality to run a department or team, which is frustrating for staff level employees that need issues to be resolved. -The WFH policy is below average compared to other software companies. -Programming language is dated, again time for an update. -Onboarding process is somewhat like hazing (you have prove yourself by doing presentations, etc), if you don’t trust or like someone don’t hire them! -Career advancement is not consistent across all departments. -Leadership asks you to speak up and when you do, you get shot down. So what is the point?
