Pros

You find some of the smartest, hardest working employees in the development department. I’ve learned so much from my peers about working with others and critical thinking.

Cons

When I started working for HCSS, I was hesitant to take the salary offer because it was quite low compared to other companies. Recruiting ultimately convinced me because of the profit sharing percentage. This in combination with unlimited rollover vacation time seemed good enough to compensate for the lower salary. As an employee owned company, we also received part of our shared profit as employee stock that grew as our company did well. It was nice. I felt secure and thought this could be a place that I could work for a long time. Every year we recited a mission, vision value statement which stressed making good lives for the employees. Company culture was something I never believed in but I was starting to. Not anymore. Fast forward to today. The CEO made up his mind to sell the company. Profit sharing bonus is gone, employees stocks are gone, roll over PTO is gone (2 weeks max now). The company did give a small, and I stress small, bump in pay to try and mitigate this but it doesn’t even come close. On top of this, the company is forcing everyone to comeback to the office. There is overwhelming support to continue allowing people, who want to, to work remotely. Also, there is no requirement to be masked or vaccinated or tested to work in the office. People get covid all the time and we actually had an employee die from covid not too long ago. Our productivity has been just as good and expenses very low. I personally save 10 hours a week in commute time. A permanent remote work option is pretty valuable to me, not a complete replacement for the loss in pay but enough to possibly keep me as an employee. The CEO isnt having it. His answer to all the employees is that productivity is not that important and if you don’t like things, maybe HCSS is not the right “fit” for you and you should go elsewhere. Nice.

Pros

Good bonus at the end of the year and stock options. Has a pretty good hold on a good niche market.

Cons

There seems to be too much emphasis on business culture but yet dismissing employee wellbeing during this pandemic. The company has set a goal of returning to the office on September 1 and months ago lifted any mask requirements. There is no requirement to get vaccinated as well. I'm not sure what the response is to the delta variant that has taken over. Texas is one of the worst states for vaccination rates and infections and Fort Bend county in particular is having a huge spike. I am pretty nervous about walking into a situation where I will be spending 8 plus hours a day around individuals with no mask and who may not be vaccinated. I wish there was some communication about our response to this. We should be watching the data and reacting appropriately.

It has been our intent throughout this pandemic to make sure that our employee’s well-being was held at a high priority, and that is still the case. Between touchless doors, hand sanitizing stations at all entry points, touchless paper towel dispensers, and free KN95 masks and face shields for all employees, we have made an effort to make all employees feel safe if working at the office (which is still optional). We have also installed a UV system in our air conditioner that allows for the air to be cleaned of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens before entering a room. The stance has been since the beginning of this pandemic that if schools are closed, we will offer remote work. If schools are open, then we will return to work as of September 1st. We continue to monitor these decisions as well as infection rates and make decisions accordingly. We will not be requiring vaccination for employees. However, we are setting aside space in our 3rd building specifically for any employees who want to take extra precautions. Work stations will be at minimum 6 feet apart (likely more) and masks will be required for anyone entering this area. We will be providing all employees with a small emblem to put outside their office/ workstation, notating that a mask is required to enter their work area.
