Staff is talented. Leadership lacks agility.

Pros

HDR has grown by acquisition to get the best talent they can. HDR does a little bit of everything, and thus inspires engineers and scientists of many persuasions. HDR has many initiatives in support and development of staff. Corporate values are shared and emphasized with staff.

Cons

While HDR's work is diverse, when you get down to the local level, there are many cliques and silos. Lip service is paid to worksharing and cross-training, but ultimately, whatever benefits the bottom line the best wins the day. This puts short term profit over long term investment in staff and growth in the marketplace. Your experience as an employee is highly dependent on the skill and professionalism of the local managers. Note that engineers (including those in the C-Suite) don't necessarily make the best Executives... especially when an executive has to make business decisions on businesses that are outside his professional experience.

Pros

The company won't get rid of you unless you voice your opinions. You have to agree with this management team or you will be shut out.

Cons

The CFO and his business team are over their heads. The CFO is very inexperienced and he's surrounded himself by other inexperienced managers. They regularly lay off employees in small batches and don't tell anyone. You try to contact an employee and they suddenly are not there anymore.

Pros

Very prosperous employee owned company with a CEO that walks the walk and owns it. You'll have good managers and bad one's. stick out the bad ones and they seem to move on away from HDR. Through the 2006 to 2010 recession, HDR actually showed double digit stock value increases.

Cons

Office attendance policy is not valid in the work world we live in today. Requirement that you live in a location that has an HDR office is out of date and is basically a lack of trust between management and direct reports.
