Pros

Competitive pay, flexible work location

Cons

Corporate leadership is more focused on following policies than thinking of the person and the optics. I joined HNTB last May, hired as a transit engineer in support of several mega project pursuits. Unfortunately neither opportunity panned out and I was left without meaningful work. I did not foresee this changing in the short-term future, so I ended up accepting another position, leaving HNTB after approximately 10 months. When hired I was offered a small signing bonus in order to pay for some medical bills since I switched companies in the middle of the year and had met the deductible at the old company. HNTB decided to make me pay back this small bonus even though it was in their best interest for me to switch jobs as I was almost exclusively on overhead. I could have dragged my feet and continued to get paid for additional two months before leaving and keeping the bonus, but I felt like this was in neither my or the companies best interests. HNTB choosing to go after this bonus feels like a very short-sighted approach and makes me unlikely to recommend them to anyone I know in the industry who is looking for a new position.

Pros

Pay is good, benefits are good, they really like recognizing people for doing their jobs.

Cons

Complete control freaks, everything has to be perfect, training is on the job and everyone is insanely busy that training is neglected. If you have a question, goodluck getting it answered in 24 hours. Not too many people can take PTO same day so you can get declined vacation. Overtime is expected even though they tell you they don’t want you working more than 40 hours, but the culture expects you to work more. People laugh when you say you were on until 8 because that can be early for them to log off. You’ll receive emails some weeks until midnight and start again at 5 am. But “it all evens out” but it really doesn’t. The most shocking thing to me was for travel, which everyone has to travel, is that if you don’t travel during “working hours” you don’t get paid. You literally have to travel a for work and don’t get paid outside 8-5. So if a flight is delayed or you have to be at the airport at 6 am for check in, you don’t get paid for it. Most offices have you pay for parking on site, many locations are over $100 for the month.

Beware if you're over 50 & you don't have a PE

Pros

They have some decent benefits (the standard healthcare; but, they also offer an EAP, and a healthy rewards program).

Cons

PEs are praised here. After all, it IS an engineering firm; but, half the employees are NOT licensed engineers. So, if you're over 50, are not in management, or are lacking a PE, beware, as you'll be on the chopping block at some point before you can retire. I was there for over 20 years, and watched this happen to many before me.
