Pros

- Extremely fast paced, fast growing company with a lot of opportunity to offer - Interesting projects focused on high frequency trading for US equities - Not too stressful, hours are very flexible, although our feature rollout rate is extremely high and there is definitely a lot of work to go around - Small team (about 20 people total) that's very well managed. No micro-managing, but you also don't feel lost - Projects are owned by the engineer working on them, and individual contribution/input matters a lot - Great for engineers who are looking to work in a lot of different areas at once(development, test, support, etc) - Startup atmosphere and feel

Pros

Customers are Wall St hedge funds, product is an FPGA based gateway for pre-trade risk analysis. Well designed software, written following Linux philosophy - C not C++, everything developed in-house, minimum open source. Software is optimized for high performance using classic techniques.- core pinning, lock free queues, poll loops, state machines. Code style is uniform, engineers are easily able to dive into any other component and readily understand it. CEO is software architect and has very strict requirements for how software is written. This is a blessing, and a difficulty, since, at times, it is hard to advance projects unless he has time to review the fine print (or until the VPs and directors bring him in for low level technical discussions). Company hires many out-of-school engineers, who are knowledgeable, enthusiastic and nice. Coworkers are uniformly 5 stars. A few senior engineers but top at their job. Excellent business setup - fee based support contracts with banks who bake the HPR developed infrastructure into their daily needs. Banks would not be able to easily swap product out - and usually do not have the engineering strength to develop internally a product as good as HPRs.

Cons

Support and maintenance are difficult, and deployment is painful manual process, instead of dev/ops. Salary compensation for senior engineers could be better. Sometimes things are micromanaged from the top. Overall, good work environment, interesting work, and much more many pros than cons.

Pros

HPR is an amazing place to work. I have learned a tremendous amount about how to build a competitive high-performance product. I always wanted to work for a company that does something the best. HPR does low latency risk management orders of magnitude faster than the competition. It has an extremely fascinating product that harnesses the benefits of the FPGA in an extremely clever way. Not only is the product great, but the people are awesome as well. We do not have any lone rangers or people with massive egos. We work well together to build a truly innovative product that our competition cannot come close to touching.

Cons

We need more qualified people! It's the best problem to have, more interesting work to go around than people to take them. Also our customers can be very demanding. Sometimes down-right rude.
