A great place to grow if you're a hard worker

Pros

Hanover is a fast-growing company with many opportunities for personal and professional growth for people who are hard-working and strong self-advocates. Managers and the management team tend to be deeply invested in their reports' upward growth, and a younger employee at Hanover has a better chance of obtaining a role with more responsibility than at many other companies. Almost every job at Hanover requires a high degree of focus and efficiency, and people who are able to really be 100% "at work" when they are at work will do well.

Cons

The high degree of focus and efficiency required by Hanover can burn some people out, and those looking for a workplace where chatter around the metaphorical "water cooler" takes up time each day may struggle in Hanover's hard-charging environment. The fast growth at Hanover means that changes in the work being conducted, and sometimes in the direction of the organization, should be expected. Some of these changes may be more comfortable than others, depending on your role.

Pros

Hanover is a real meritocracy. If you excel, you will get raises and promotions quickly. Most managers actively help you plan your career. If you want to go to grad school they'll hell you strategies on applications; if you want to stay long term, they'll give you opportunities to build skills and get promoted. Which leads to another point. On the research side, you will gain hard skills that are easily transferred to grad school or other companies. Hanover makes a point of training researchers well, and excels in this area. As a researcher, you learn a ton. The random and interesting topics you become an expert in are legitimately valuable, professionally and even socially. The work requires you to focus and learn, and it's really intellectually rewarding. Finally, Hanover does a fantastic job of building strong processes to train, deliver feedback, and streamline production. This helps keep things running smoothly, helps you to know where you stand, and overall makes the hiring, orientation, and day-to-day pleasant and efficient.

Cons

On the research side, it's really fast-paced. You need to be OK with ambiguity, best guesses, and trusting your gut. If you want to get the perfect answer or spend weeks on a topic, this is not a good place to work. They provide daily free snacks, and frequent free breakfasts and lunches and happy hours. It's easy to gain weight, because the work is sedentary. The 401k match is mediocre.

Pros

DC/VA is an amazing, vibrant environment for young professionals. Compensation was higher than I expected, and the intellectual firepower in every department was impressive. I was given flexibility from my sales role to explore and develop new markets. Not a lot of hand holding or micromanagement, but plenty of support from senior management when needed.

Cons

For sales people, this is a competitive environment with some really hard-working, experienced peers. Bumping into each other from time to time over strategy and tactics is a given, and if you're not accustomed to making data-driven arguments and suggestions, you'll flounder.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I agree that our people are smart and driven regardless of department. Your recommendation about more cross-departmental collaboration is helpful and we have just recently launched a working group to identify ways for teams to engage with each other as well as with different functions more frequently and effectively.
