Great company and history, needs serious management overhaul

Pros

The third generation of the Davidson family is involved in the day to day operations of the company. They are wonderful people and so inspiring. The history is rich and riding is fun. Employees staff most of the events and have the opportunity to interact with customers. It is a great experience to work an event like Daytona Bike Week or Sturgis.

Cons

The middle and upper levels of management are primarily home grown. Many have not worked for another company and came to H-D out of college. The culture is very out of date and could best be described as "good old boy". Even though one of the top 5 focus areas has been Leadership development, there has been very little impact. There is very little room for advancement unless you have a person “in” with someone at a higher level in the company.

A great, casual place to work, but you WORK HARD.

Pros

Casual business atmosphere, good compensation, great vacation policy. Most people are very friendly and ego-less. There are not a lot of layers.

Cons

Very limited opportunities to grow and progress in your career -- leads to a SLOW career path. Stress is eaten for lunch daily. There are precious few resources to work with (time, money, people), but expectations are not balanced appropriately. Questions are seen as a sign of weakness or negativity.

Pros

Great brand and product, fantastic customer base.

Cons

The current leadership has managed to annihilate product development and engineering and populate these key functions by incompetence and mediocrity. Outsourcing trends are downright scary as the leadership is deliberately trying to outsource lost skill and severely depleted human capital. Outsourcing is becoming a way to make this great American company global, but I think that the company is at risk of losing its American identity in this shortsighted process. This was once one of the great American companies, today it is at risk of becoming one of many mediocre global companies and that it's if the things go well for the current leadership. And, if the things don't go well for them, it may be the end. Either way, Harley Davidson is never going to be a great American company again.
