Pros

Great infrastructure, benefits, time off. Wonderful content. I learned a ton and have numerous different opportunities to stretch my skills.

Cons

Significantly more political environment than I had experienced in more traditional journalism roles. Could be slow and bureaucratic.

Pros

Hard to beat pay among other universities - transparency with pay grades and clarity on what's within reason for negotiation is great Flexible work arrangements 100% employer matching on 403(b) Generous paid time off Professional development opportunities - Harvard classes with 90% reimbursement, Extension School courses for a minimal fee

Cons

As with most higher ed, there can be a lot of bureaucracy. Depending on your department (if it's very small), growth opportunities may be limited, but I have had colleagues make moves between departments for promotions.

Not worth the easy work schedule

Pros

Subject matter can be interesting; easy hours; everyone gets a week off between Christmas and New Years; your relatives back home in Indiana will be impressed that you're working at Harvard.

Cons

Uncompetitive salaries and benefits; no equity; no career opportunities for most fields; highly de-centralized structure: If your boss is crazy or abusive there is generally nothing you can do about it (Harvard rewards tenure with management positions, thus managers are often untrained, incompetent, and unfit to manage anyone.) Generally dysfunctional and infantile atmosphere (not uncommon at higher education institutions). During the recession Harvard chose to lay off long-term employees rather than dip into their $20B. At no time did President Faust ever officially address her employees. It was an unconscionable choice.
