Pros

Good pay and benefits, pays for gym membership (has onsite gym in SLC too). Some projects are interesting. Plenty of opportunity to dig in and contribute if you look around. These opportunities are increasing across the company for the most part. You can develop your skills in these projects.

Cons

True, reorgs can be disruptive. Those that remain working with senior management the longest (either direct or indirect) seem to have the best experience. This also often leads to people not using their skills best and to frustration with their roles. Some important decisions are made with missing information that could have been sought. Some products are invested in and pushed without being tested enough first, too. We say we're transparent, but, it really depends on who you work with and your relationship with senior leaders. Managers need to learn to have "fierce conversations" with their employees with enough frequency, and they also need to learn how to be effective managers (or they shouldn't manage). Leadership needs to discern much better on that front --- choosing which people should manage people. True, the Peter Principle is rampant, probably because leadership doesn’t know any better. Right now, we seem to select managers based on their sales, communication, and presentation skills, or on their high technical aptitude. Are those the best criteria? Maybe. Or maybe not.

Thank you for sharing this feedback. I agree that we need to have a measurement infrastructure in place to assess the effectiveness of every manager at Health Catalyst, and we will have that infrastructure in place by the end of this year (2018), as we roll out the 360-degree feedback process. I regret that it's taken us this long to roll this out. That will enable us to spot and then address issues where the team member experience with their manager is sub-optimal. I invite you to share your feedback through this process, and I hope that as we work hard to address issues in the coming months, that you'll see improvement in your team member experience. Thanks again for sharing this feedback. Best, Dan

Pros

Benefits, Unlimited PTO, Working from home, Compensation, Transparency

Cons

I was very impressed with Health Catalyst when I first heard about them and eventually became hired here. I will say as time continues to pass I am becoming less and less impressed and the benefits and the perks are eventually not going to be enough to keep people. • While I know the company is working on career paths for individuals, it does appear that it really is all about who you know and not what you know to advance with the company. There is a lot of value placed on the work you have done solely for Health Catalyst and who you have had the opportunity to work with versus years of experience and knowledge. I recently interviewed for a different position and I did not advance to the next round of interviews. I was told I needed to introduce myself more to others in the company and get my name out there. This can be hard to do remotely and when you are an introvert and when you are limited in the work you are working on by your manager. Everyone does not have the type of personality that can just go up and start talking to people and try to get them to like you. Everyone’s personality is different and that should be respected and we should not be forced to be someone we are not to advance. • Some employees are placed in better positions and given more opportunities to meet others across the company and to be a part of work more visible to others. I have even stated the type of work I would like to do with my manager and their manager and I have seen others in my group who I have not heard express this get those opportunities. • The people I had interviewed with for the internal posting I had not worked with in the past. Those who advanced had worked with them for at least a year; therefore they already had a relationship with them and knew them better than they knew me which I felt was a disadvantage for me interviewing for the position. The interview was solely around the work I had done with Health Catalyst and nothing about the many years of experience I had in the field. Again, it is about who you know or the fraction of the time you have been at Health Catalyst and not about prior work. There are a lot of young people with the company who do not have as much experience, but there are some of us who have a lot more experience than the amount of things done at Health Catalyst. That experience can be leveraged and help Health Catalyst, but it does not seem to matter when trying to advance. • I have also seen that those that are moving up in the ranks are people who started with the company earlier on and it seems do not have as much experience, but they were in the right place at the right time. Someone like me with years of experience in the industry can be over looked because I have not shaken enough hands here. This can be very discouraging to want to continue working here. • There are some positions that managers of those positions force to only be done in Salt Lake City which is hard for a remote employee to feel they can truly work in different areas and advance with the company when the list of opportunities has already been condensed. • Lack of Diversity

Thank you for your thoughts, and your comments/advice on some things that we can improve upon here at Health Catalyst. There are certainly many aspects of what we do here that could be done better, and many of the points you mention are areas where I know that we can continue to improve. One area of focus for us is one you mention-- continuing improvement to our internal hiring process. This can be nuanced for sure, and while I may not agree with your perspective in all aspected regarding this area, I do agree that there are always ways for us to make it better. Thanks again for your comments!

Unstable and Unreliable

Pros

The actual team members are amazing, smart and work hard every day. The type of person at Health Catalyst is top tier and great to work with.

Cons

Trust in leadership has eroded over the years and morale has taken a nose dive. Constant layoffs follow reassurances of a brighter future. Benefits have been slashed and team members are being asked to work more and effectively get paid much less. This was a great company that I would highly recommend to anyone who would listen. I now have to tell people to stay far, far away.

Thank you for taking the time to share your honest perspective. I’m glad to hear your appreciation for the caliber and dedication of your fellow team members here at Health Catalyst. At the same time, I want to acknowledge the seriousness of the concerns you’ve raised around trust, morale, and the impact of difficult decisions such as layoffs and benefit changes. I know these actions affect people on a very personal level, and I regret the hardship they’ve caused. While some choices have been necessary to protect the company’s long-term stability, it’s clear we need to do better in how we communicate, support our teams, and rebuild trust. Your feedback reinforces the importance of refocusing on transparency, accountability, and care as we chart our path forward. Thank you again for your candor—it helps us see more clearly where change is needed. Thank you for more than five years of dedication to our mission! -Dan B
