Pros

Great culture, I feel comfortable asking for a one on one discussion with any of the leadership. Genuinely tries to address concerns and is very generous in making accommodations. Very flexible with work life balance, my wife has had two children while I have been employed and I have never felt pressure to prioritize work above the needs of my family.

Cons

Slow software releases to custom client environments. Slowly and painfully trying to standardize the environments while keeping existing clients happy and supporting old releases. Hotfixes, custom install scripts, and supporting linearly scaling sql server vms causes a slow churn of software updates. DOS, gets maybe 2 or 3 releases a year. Meanwhile other (EDW, big data, and BI)software vendors are surpassing Health Catalyst in features and scale.

Thank you for your review and feedback, and thank you for your 5+ years of contributions at Health Catalyst! Thanks also for your positive feedback, and for your perspective on some ways we can improve from a software development perspective. As part of our annual planning process we have a focus on our DOS platform vision for the next 3-5 years, which includes a deep dive assessment of where we are strong and where we need to improve and strengthen our capabilities relative to competitors. We'll discuss this project during a number of all-team-member meetings and I believe we'll make specific investments and plans to improve in 2021. Thank you again for your contributions! Best, Dan

A Stream of Shifting Priorities

Pros

During my time at HC, I've been a part of a team that has shifted directions on a frequent basis. I put this in the "Pros" category, because it has been a great opportunity to grow personally, and learn a lot of new skills. It also has allowed me to get a taste of different aspects of engineering, and hone in on what I want to further pursue in my career. This agility in adapting to the ever-changing landscape has also allowed our team to continually provide value to the larger organization. This company has excellent benefits, as well as a great remote-first culture! The leadership team takes employee health and well-being very seriously, and as a team member you feel respected and cared for/about.

Cons

There have been a couple, sudden, company-wide, hiring freezing while my team was in the process of interviewing (including a few individuals that I referred to the company). This is largely the reason why I say "No" when I am asked if I would refer a friend. This relates to my main point, in that there is a lot of shifting that has occurred as priorities and direction change, which causes instability in onboarding new team members, and retention of existing team members.

Thank you for your review and for your feedback about your 3+ years of experience and contributions -- thank you for those contributions to our software engineering as a company. I apologize for the negative experience you had after referring a friend and then experiencing a hiring freeze. We are trying to get more stable and more thoughtful and predictable in our processes and our planning as we scale as a company, but we still have a ways to go. More and more we're trying to batch together strategic decisions around the annual planning process, including approving a hiring plan for the year that can remain in place for that year. But we also operate in a very dynamic, competitive market, and so sometimes we do need to make nearer-term changes. Hopefully we will keep getting better here! Thank you again for your feedback and for your contributions to our company's mission and success. Best, Dan

Pros

They treat team members like family. They put employees at the center of their flywheel

Cons

A key phrase that is used is “administrative burden” and steps that are being taken to eliminate it. For those of us who fall into that category, it feels like we have to constantly watch our backs for the knife that will eliminate our jobs.

Thank you for your review and feedback! And I appreciate the perspective and feedback about finding the right way to talk about our financial sustainability goals -- it's important to still be transparent with where we are and where we need to be, while also providing reassurance and commitment to our team members that we'll get there in the most positive way we possibly can, including by keeping team members and their engagement at the center of our strategy and our flywheel. I'm grateful you joined us nearly one year ago, and am hopeful that we can continue forward, together in 2021 and for many more years to come! Best, Dan
