Pros

Top reasons I like working at Health Catalyst is that they are committed to making lasting and effective changes in Health Care by partnering with Health Care organizations. I feel connected to this cause and feel a sense of purpose and commitment to assist. I feel like the company makes employees a priority.

Cons

As a remote employee, at times I feel disconnected and behind on the things going on in the company. It personally feels difficult to discover a career path amid responsibilities to clients

Thank you for this feedback, and for your work as a Senior Analytics Engineer these past four years, working with clients in a leadership role to enable their success. I appreciate also the feedback regarding some of the challenges of being remote. We're working to improve here, and I hope that will also be reflected in your sense of career advancement opportunities that will exist regardless of where you reside. Thank you again for your dedication and hard work, it is making a difference! Best, Dan

Pros

The company culture is one of respect and caring. It's not simply something we talk about (i.e., lip service); it is actually reflected in nearly every interaction I have with fellow team members, from our CEO and senior leadership on down. I truly believe if something was really bothering me, I could send an email to any one of our leaders and they would take it seriously and be happy that I shared my concerns. The compensation and benefits are also very generous. Health Catalyst wants to hire folks who strive to be world class in everything they do, and it shows. But the company also places a huge value on humility and doesn't tolerate behavior from individuals who may be talented, but who are not great team players.

Cons

I really have nothing negative to say about this company. I've been in the software development field for a long time and this is, by far, the best place I've ever worked. So rather than listing a "con", I would just provide a bit of an early warning. Since the time I started at Health Catalyst, the number of employees has increased five fold and we became a public company. During this time, I've seen some signs of a very subtle shift in focus from mission and values toward bottom-line profitability. This is natural, and perhaps even somewhat necessary, now that we are a publicly traded company. But I really want to make sure we don't drift away from our core identity. The mission is still to transform healthcare for the better. And yes, we have to be profitable in order to have the opportunity to transform healthcare. But just like the old adages, "do what you love and the money will follow," or "build it and they will come," I want to see our primary focus continue to be serving our customers and fulfilling our mission.

Thank you for this detailed and insightful feedback, informed by your significant tenure and your many contributions as a technology leader at Health Catalyst these past 5-7 years. Your work matters and has directly contributed to our five-fold growth during your time at Health Catalyst. I also appreciate, and agree with your "early warning" feedback. It is a tenuous and tricky balance to keep the mission at the center of everything we do, while also recognizing the truth of the adage "no margin, no mission." I'm convinced we have not always gotten the right balance between mission-focus and financial sustainability focus throughout the years, including over the past year and a half as a public company. However, I will share my continued strong desire to keep the mission at the center of everything we do, and then to figure out how we can ensure that this mission work is also financially sustainable. The annual planning process is an opportunity to work towards this end, and one of the themes I'm most excited about, particularly as our hope increases that we're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel regarding COVID vaccine development and distribution, is the opportunity to see increased work in the foundational areas of clinical improvement and clinical analaytics. This is such important mission work, and I believe in 2021 we'll see meaningful growth here. We'll keep an open dialogue in our all team member meetings also regarding this balance between mission and financial sustainability, and strive to make the best judgment calls in striking this balance. You, as a software engineering Director, and a member of our extended leadership team, can directly contribute to these decisions. I appreciate all you have done and will continue to do to enable us to grow and succeed as a company. Best, Dan

Pros

Health Catalyst has been a great place to be early in my career. Within the DOS platform organization I have (almost) always had skilled managers and mentors. Each member of the team has a say and is trusted to perform their role. I have been able to continually progress in my career because of that trust coupled with the tremendous influence of world-class team members in the engineering organization. The leadership team does a phenomenal job communicating company decisions (even difficult ones) and living the values they preach. Dan, the CEO, often talks about all HC team members as fellow owners in the company. Regular equity grants make this technically true but the leadership team's actions make it feel true as well because they regularly seek and act on our feedback. I love the flexibility offered by Health Catalyst (unlimited/flexible PTO, work from home policies, etc.). I have had the option to work from home for years now so my day-to-day life has changed very little during the pandemic. I was recently promoted to a new position and have been very pleased with the support I have received from various organizations of the company as I navigate new challenges. Generally speaking, help is available when you need it.

Cons

The business has been strongly impacted by COVID-19. Those impacts did not lead to layoffs but have meant 401(k) matching and compensation adjustments were put on pause. Position eliminations (for open job listings) have also left my team indefinitely smaller and forced us to push back the delivery of helpful features in our applications. As the company grows it's hard to keep tabs on everything that is happening. This is probably an expected part of growing quickly but we're not immune to it. Increasing team specialization feels like it leaves less room for cross-discipline pollination. The business path to profitability feels less sure than it did at the beginning of the year. I'm not sure if this is completely due to COVID-19, in fact, my feeling is that it's not. Sales updates are generally positive but it feels like the same kinds of sales activities we have performed in the past are falling short. That said, this could be off as this is not my area of expertise.

Thank you for your feedback and for your leadership in the DOS organization for the past 5-7 years! I'm grateful for your hard work and contribution! I also appreciate your emphasis on the importance of the company getting to its stated objective of profitability, while also still staying focused on the mission. We will discuss this at length in our upcoming all team member meetings, as fellow owners, and confirm our focus on these important goals. Thank you again for your contributions and your trust. Best, Dan
