As mission- and team-member-oriented as a company gets

Pros

Individuals aim to keep the mission and team members in mind when making decisions. Innovation in Health Catalyst technology and professional services organizations is critical to enable customers to make better, data-driven decisions. Health Catalyst could truly help improve the healthcare ecosystem

Cons

Still a lot of maturing to do across the company (products, services, operations) as the company scales (but it is fun to be a part of a scaling company!). Need to focus on measuring the performance of team members so that high-performing team members get rewarded and low-performing team members don’t simply get shuffled around to different positions – keeping low-performing team members demoralizes those that work hard and are high performers, especially when everyone is on the same bonus structure

Thank you for your encouraging words and for your constructive feedback as well. Thank you also for contributing to the company's mission for over three years. Your longer-term commitment to the company makes a difference. I share your vision that Health Catalyst can play an important role in enabling meaningful transformation in healthcare, both through our technology and our services. I also agree with your assessment that we have a lot of maturing to do across the company. We are trying to become more "courageously transparent" in dealing with performance issues (this is one reason we as a leadership team are considering adding "courageous" as a modifier to the operating principle of transparency, to emphasize that transparency is most critical in challenging situations, including when there is a performance issue that needs to be addressed, and often requires courage). We also continue to try to think carefully about benefitting from the team-based mindset and bonus infrastructure, while also having ways to recognize extraordinary individual performance. Recognizing extraordinary individual performance has largely come through the promotion process and through off-cycle compensation adjustments. But there is likely more we can do there. I'll visit with Linda (our Chief People Officer) on this topic, and see what we can learn from other companies in this regard. Thank you for your feedback and for your contributions to the company's mission. Best, Dan

Pros

Bryan Hinton is the best manager I have ever worked for. He and his Platform Engineering leadership team have established such a rare culture of trust and an operating model that is incredibly rigorous yet efficient. Every meeting and discussion is productive and full of positive energy. Some of our discussions and other interactions can get pretty intense, because of the complexity and because of the passion and the pride we take in the software we're building and why we're building it, but our mutual trust and goodwill is reinforced through this continuous collaboration.

Cons

Some other parts of Health Catalyst struggle to achieve the same level of rigor, scale, and collaboration. They are often quite siloed and have wide process variability, but they are getting better.

Thank you for your feedback and for sharing more about your positive experience in Platform Engineering. I am also a big fan of Bryan, and thought his presentation in our most recent all-team-member meeting, last week, was outstanding and really important, as we work to become better across the board in building scalable technology. The work being done on the Platform team is leading the way. I also acknowledge that we have a long way to go, across many product and service lines, before we will approached our scalability goals. But I also feel good that the awareness of the challenge is high and that the commitment to making meaningful progress is shared. In our weekly Leadership Team meetings in 2018 we are incorporating more "operational reviews" of each major functional area of the company, rotating through all of these areas on a quarterly basis. These operational reviews are also attended by Extended Leadership Team members, and are showcasing the focus, the effort, the challenges and the progress being made in becoming scalable and sustainable, while also contributing directly to the mission. I'm encouraged by these reviews, not because there aren't problems and challenges for us to overcome, but more because we have a solid, realistic awareness of where we are and where we need to be, along with a plan of how to get there. We will always, always have challenges to face, and improvement that will be needed, but as long as we can face those challenges in a clear-eyed way, with a commitment to overcome them, we will continue to progress towards achieving the mission. Thank you for your personal contributions to this mission. The platform is the foundation for all improvement. Your work in making the platform scalable and robust and best-in-class is absolutely critical. Best, Dan

Pros

2018 seems to be going great for the company. Marketplace seems to really be responding to the sustained success of the company.

Cons

2017 was a bit of a tough year. Market challenges and "company needing to grow up" seemed to conspire together for one of the most challenging years of the company -- but it looks like the company came out of that in 2018 and things are going really well now.

Thank you for your review and for your encouraging words. I agree with your assessment -- 2017 was a challenging year for us as a comp;any, both because of external factors, but also because it was time for us to take the next step in our maturation, and those steps are not without pain. I feel sincere gratitude to you and to our hundreds of other teammates who stuck with us through the challenges of 2017, including a major reorganization mid-year, to make it to the other side of those challenges. We are fortunate to be seeing significant success and growth in 2018, and we're excited to continue with that momentum by finishing strong in this quarter and continuing throughout the rest of this year. Thank you for your direct contributions to that success. Best, Dan
