Pros

Good culture, people, benefits, products and services

Cons

Salary and Bonuses: The compensation at HC is significantly below market average. While there is frequent discussion about becoming more competitive, little progress has been made. Raises are infrequent and, when they do happen, often fail to keep up with inflation. I’ve been a full-time employee for five years, consistently receiving excellent feedback from both clients and managers, who have acknowledged my exceptional performance. Despite this, I’ve only received one personal raise during my entire tenure. This lack of recognition is frustrating and has led me to consider seeking opportunities elsewhere. RSUs and bonuses have been discontinued or decreased to almost nothing. Company-wide raises seem to be frequently promised and always delayed. There's always "good things coming" that never seem to come.

Thank you for sharing your experience and for your dedication over the past five years. I’m grateful to hear that you found our culture, team members, benefits, and the products and services we provide to be positive aspects of your experience so far with Health Catalyst. I appreciate you sharing your concerns about compensation, and I encourage you to contact your people operations business partner to explore compensation in more detail. In addition, I want to provide some quick information about the process Health Catalyst follows when working to identify team member compensation. For nearly a decade, we have used Radford's salary survey data to guide our team member pay practices. Radford is a highly regarded technology salary survey that tends to trend on the higher end of the compensation spectrum compared to other reputable sources such as Korn Ferry, Mercer, and Willis Towers Watson. Importantly, Radford provides job matching data for the vast majority of roles at Health Catalyst, making it the most relevant benchmark for us. Its data is built on hundreds of thousands of validated inputs from companies around the world, ensuring transparency and reliability. While all salary data sources have some lag time, Radford updates its reports quarterly, and we align with best practices by updating our salary ranges annually. As part of our long-term commitment to competitive pay, we are working toward a goal of compensating all core team members at the 65th percentile of the market—covering nearly 90% of our workforce. While we recognize that we aren’t there yet for every role, we are committed to reaching this target in the coming years. In 2024, this commitment informed our decision to provide core team members with an above-market 5% base salary increase in December 2024, with many also receiving additional adjustments to bring them closer to the 65th percentile. I hope this increase was helpful and meaningful for you, as you received it a few months ago. In addition, we have continued to prioritize base salary increases in the 2025 board-approved operating plan as well, with the next base salary increase for core team members to take effect this December. Beyond compensation, we remain committed to fostering career growth and internal advancement. Over the past 3 ½ years, nearly 900 team members have earned promotions—a reflection of our dedication to recognizing and promoting talent from within. I hear your frustration, and I want to acknowledge that your contributions matter. While we may not always get everything right, we are committed to continuous improvement and ensuring you feel valued. I truly appreciate your feedback and the work you do. If you’re open to a conversation, I’d welcome the opportunity to discuss your experience further in a 1:1. Best, Dan Burton

Pros

Great work/life balance. Health Catalyst values their employees and does the best they can for them. Annual base salary increases have been fair.

Cons

Multiple down years in a row leading to declining benefits, consecutive layoffs, and probably more next year. The company is significantly de-emphasizing software in response. Health Catalyst may survive as a company but it doesn't feel like it will be an optimistic place to be a Software Engineer along the way.

Thanks for your review. First, I am glad to hear that we are living up to our operating principles and cultural attributes so you can have a balanced work-life and feel valued. I agree that market realities have been difficult. We have needed to make strategic adjustments that rely on building strong and deep partnerships with our clients that does include significant recent growth in services like tech-enabled-managed-services (TEMS). While we’re grateful to see this significant growth with clients, and we and they recognize the strong ROI and value proposition of these solutions, there is always a “T” in TEMS, and we will continue to need to be differentiated in our technology offerings in order to achieve our mission. We will discuss the dual importance of both our technology and our services to our overall company strategy, including with each of our three key stakeholders, such that I hope you’ll find a bright future ahead for you at Health Catalyst as a software engineer. It’s encouraging to see increased interest among prospects and clients for our technology solutions in our key areas of focus. Thanks for your more than four years of contributions to our success! Best, Dan Burton

Pros

- Flexibility to work from home or anywhere with a good enough internet connection. - Despite all that I'm discouraged by, I believe leadership's intentions are good and that they genuinely are trying to do what they can to counter many of the challenging circumstances the company faces.

Cons

- Distracting and divisive culture wars have crept into the company communication channels and meetings. Leadership is very one sided in their participation and makes the divisiveness worse rather than better. When the outrage mob demands leadership address their concerns, they do it. When the mob isn't satisfied and they demand leadership send a message that more firmly enforces their biases, leadership does it. When anyone, even respectfully, voices an opposing view, they're shouted into silence. - I've been gaslighted by middle management multiple times in the last year. - I've been discriminated on the basis of gender and religion (not mormon favoritism that other reviewers have talked about) during my time here. - Layoffs have become a regular thing. They've gone from almost never occurring to yearly, to a twice yearly thing. At this rate they'll be quarterly by next year. - Our tech stacks are outdated. The longer you work here, the less qualified you become to get a job elsewhere. - Poor integration across departments and business units with regular in-fighting among different teams. - Little to no cross training and increasing turnover which result in a bad working environment for those who remain. - A major shift over the last couple years from putting people before profits like we used to do toward putting profits before people, but still talking as if people are first. - Benefits continue to be cut and policies for taking advantage of benefits that remain continue to get more and more constraining. - Equity based compensation is severely devalued to the point where it's another form of pay cut. I realize this is market dependent and like inflation, is out of leadership's control. None the less it is a con of working here right now.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with me. It is clear from your review and your experience that we have a great deal more work to do to improve as a company, in enabling every team member who is committed to the Health Catalyst Way to feel welcomed, loved, respected and appreciated. That is my hope and desire, for every team member at Health Catalyst. I'm frustrated by the way that "culture wars" play out in our broader society, and seem to lead towards incivility and a lack of listening to one another, and a lack of respect for one another. There is also not enough of a focus on what we have in common, and where we can build bridges and become more united. That has been my goal at Health Catalyst -- enable us to build bridges, show respect to one another, listen first, care for one another, and live the Golden Rule. Clearly, we have a lot more work to do here, based on your experience. That can feel discouraging for many team members, myself and yourself included. I do strive to put team members first, to focus on team members and their engagement and their experience every day. But I'm not perfect, and I make mistakes and fall short, and for that I apologize. And we fall short as a company and as team members, often. And ultimately, I am accountable for any instances where we fall short of our mission, our operating principles, our cultural attributes, and our strategy. And I don't offer any excuses for that, but rather, take accountability for this. I will commit to keep working to improve, first in my own personal behavior, and then as a leader responsible and accountable for our company's performance and progress. I appreciate every team member who is willing to similarly work and fight and strive to contribute to the company's success, and I hope this will include you, working to help our company become better every day. Best, Dan
