HC is a good company

Pros

- Worthwhile mission - Trustworthy executive leadership team - Solid benefits - Good co-workers - Great work life balance

Cons

The biggest con for me was career growth. I was at Health Catalyst for about 5 years. Four of those years were spent doing the same job function. I received a few generous raises but my responsibilities didn't change. I hit a plateau where I wasn't gaining new skills or responsibilities, I felt like the only way for me to progress was to leave Health Catalyst. Career path is an issue leadership at HC has addressed for years and it is much better within certain parts of the company.

Thank you for your review and feedback, and for your six years of contribution at Health Catalyst. Pros

I enjoy my work, and for the most part, have a decent work-life balance. The company mission, to be a catalyst for massive, sustained healthcare improvement, is meaningful. I've appreciated being a remote team member during COVID-19. I love my immediate work team.

Cons

Our pay is still lagging. I am concerned about our acquisitions. While we say we acquire companies that have the same values as we do, many of the teammates who have joined via recent acquisitions do not demonstrate these behaviors during their day-to-day work. They are aggressive about their product, not the company's mission. Instead of partnering for improvement, I've observed many speaking ill of others and refusing to listen, seek mutual purpose, or adapt to the new company they are now a part of. They demand things be adapted for them, and appear unwilling to integrate into the organization. They pretend they are, and say the right things when the right level of leadership is present, but behave differently in other meetings. This isn't to say Health Catalyst doesn't need to listen and learn from acquisitions, grow and adapt, but often, there are solid, data-informed reasons we do things the way we do. I've seen no interest from those recently acquired to seek to understand these things. Instead, they actively discount others' expertise and tell us why we need to do things the way they want us to do them. I also worry about our desire to aggressively grow. In many of the conversations and meetings I am involved in, the desire to grow appears to be more important than being a catalyst for improvement. The tone of conversations has changed, with many focused only on growth, not the unique benefit we bring to our clients and the patients they serve.

Thank you for your review and feedback, and for your more than nine years of contribution to our growth and success. I appreciate hearing of the positives you've experienced, and we'll work to reinforce those elements. I also appreciate your advice on areas where we need to watch and focus and improve. Acquisitions are definitely complicated and can be tricky, for sure. We've certainly been active here since going public, and I'm grateful to have some time and space to work on really effective integration, and that includes deep mission-alignment integration as well. I also appreciate your feedback regarding how we best think about growth. Growth done in a mission-consistent matter is the life blood of the company and is directly tied to accomplishing our mission. But we must ensure that it's mission-consistent, always, with massive measurable improvement at the heart of everything we do. We'll keep our eye on this, keep our focus here, and strive to preserve that central aspect of our unique culture in the months and years ahead. Best, Dan

Pros

Health Catalyst is different in a good way. As far as I can tell from my experiences so far, executive leadership is honest, transparent and accountable. I trust that they see employees as people, not just "resources" and frame decisions about the business through that mindset. I've been at a few other companies in my career and this is not always the case. My experience so far has been in a client-facing role, and I have a great client which is respectful and considerate. Our team works hard to meet their deliverables (which are reasonable) and they are very appreciative of the value we provide them. Our client-facing internal team is supportive and respectful. I am not so naive to think that this is always the case and every client is easy to work with. I worked with HC at a client in a previous position and was impressed with everyone I worked with enough that I joined HC. My experience being inside the company now has confirmed my experiences as a client - so far, everyone has been helpful, smart, considerate and hard working. The benefits are excellent. The compensation structure with bonuses and RSUs helps you achieve a higher total comp when company performance is good. Work is always going to be work, but it is nice to be in an environment where HC and our clients are trying to improve the world - I've been able to work on projects which really, truly, actually are making a positive difference for people and patients and we have the data to back that up. It's not just relentless pursuit of profit, analytics for the sake of squeezing every last bit of profitability from a customer, and I appreciate being able to finish my day knowing the work I did is positive and contributes to the greater good. To summarize, I'm happy to be here. Everything in life has pros and cons, and so far my experience at HC is that the pros far outweigh the cons.

Cons

if you're reading this during interviews, make sure you negotiate a base salary you'll be happy with for a few years, as there doesn't seem to be a standard yearly 2-4% COL raise here. Company performance seems to dictate when/how much standard (non-promotion) raises are given. This is understandable for a company in the growth phase which is working hard to be sustainably profitable, and the RSUs do help, but are subject to the fluctuations of the stock market, and bonuses are not guaranteed although my understanding is they have been paid almost every year although not always at 100% (sliding scale). Be sure to be your own advocate during the hiring process as that may be your salary for a few years. "Unlimited" PTO is a racket that companies use to avoid paying out accrued vacation time upon departure and and minimize employee-related costs on balance sheets. I wish HC would move to a formalized PTO structure and renegotiate client contracts in such a way that doesn't subtly discourage taking time off work. I knew exactly what I was getting into with "unlimited" PTO and was sure to make sure my total compensation made it worthwhile for me personally. That said, my work life balance has been good and most weeks I am working 40-45 hours. Nobody questions my coming and going or when I take days off as long as my client is happy and I'm meeting my deliverables - your mileage may vary.

Thank you for your review and feedback, and thank you for choosing to join Health Catalyst this past year. I'm grateful to hear of the positives you've experienced, and am also appreciative of your constructive feedback. Regarding base salaries, we're pleased that nearly every team member at Health Catalyst received a meaningful base salary increase of 5% on April 1, or a pro rated increase for those who'd been with Health Catalyst less than a year. And we're excited to continue to prioritize base salary increases in the future. Also, we'll keep emphasizing, at every level, the importance of taking time off, and our support for every team member to have meaningful time off that is flexible, every single year, through a combination of many company-paid-holidays and additional PTO time. Thanks again for your feedback and for being at Health Catalyst! Best, Dan
