Pros

Hensel Phelps is a fairly decent company. You will start out with a fairly decent salary if financial stability is what your looking for. Hensel Phelps also has a great 401k matching plan. There will be many long hours(10+ hour days), but if you can stick it out for a couple years there is a financial reward. You will get a very good hands on construction experience at Hensel Phelps. If you don't want to get dirty, then Hensel Phelps might not be a good place for you.

Cons

Hensel Phelps is a "cowboy" type construction company. MINORITIES PLEASE PROCEED WITH CAUTION. Hensel Phelps has done a terrible job with work live balance. This is something to consider if you have a family or busy social life outside work. To the civil engineers: Depending on the district, management doesn't care if you get your EIT or not. There is no bonus or promotion associated with that. You will be expected to move quite frequently with very little notice beforehand. You could be going to a project in the middle of nowhere very quickly and you will be expected to say "yes". Hensel Phelps will throw you to the wolves starting out. There is very little training and you are expected to train yourself if you want to keep your job.

Pros

HP is a strong company when it comes to government jobs, they can't compete in the private sector because other companies eat them alive.

Cons

horrible company to work for, first when they hire you they tell you that they will gonna to send you to a specific city and at the send they send you to the middle of nowhere ( my experience). Second, the people that work in HP are not normal, if you are not like one of them, they don't consider you part of them. Also, be ready to work as a labor person because when they do not feel to pay people to do certain things, they tell the new hires to fix things that the subs didn't do or missed before they leave. The reason of why they do that is because some of the superintendents move up from being a carpenter to be a superintendent and they think because they did it you have to do it. They don't realize that you went to college and got a degree ( my case civil engineering) I haven't seen a company like that. Also, forget your life while you work here. The pay is not good at all, people think because they make 50k a year working 60-70 hrs is good, if you work that amount of hours you are making 14 or 15 per hour, and I don't think that's good money. I quit HP after 6 months because I got a better job, better pay and better people to work with. I hope this helps to anyone who is considering joining HP

Pros

Great learning experience. Ok pay, great benefits. Great for a work-aholic.

Cons

HP culture is extremely specific, and if you are different in anyway they will make sure you know it. They are very very very cliquish, all the way up to the top. Drains a person's desire to put in 110%
