Pros

If you are in the right department and have a good team, you will learn a lot and advance fairly easily. I've never faced any sort of discrimination for being a woman or POC, which is a big plus. The management is pretty understanding if you have personal issues and need time off or a flexible schedule, although this is based on only the handful of managers I have worked with. Other have reported a different experience.

Cons

Due to enterprise wide budget cuts, the company has very few projects underway and most people have nothing to do all day. This can last several months. We get loaned out to other departments, but those departments also have little to no work. I've worked here for 3 years and I feel like I've lost the strength and energy that I used to have in college and my mind has become dull from doing so little or just trying to walk on eggshells around the sharks in the company. I want to leave this company so badly, but I keep getting rejected from interviews because I still don't have enough experience. Overall, the company does not seem to know where it is going. It keeps changing it's mind about where departments should be and you will be moved from place to place at least once a year. Projects will get stuck in solutioning for months or even years and then get descoped because there is no budget. As a BTA, I'm not allowed to attend requirements gathering sessions because if I charge those hours to the project, the project will run out of money. I'm just supposed to somehow get the requirements without actually interacting with the stakeholders or developers.

Pros

Good pay, Nice co-workers. That's really about it. Plenty of work to go around

Cons

No work life balance. Working just 40 hours is considered under achieving. Often just got one day off per week and approached 60 hours a week. OT? lol, no you are salaried so you are "required to work the needed hours to get the job done". Never mind the fact that you just lost 3 people from your 15 person team. Just divide up the work and keep going.

Pros

WFH, On-site gym, good co-workers

Cons

Amazing lack of oversight and governance. Knowledge throughout the organization is fractured and poorly dispersed. Managers at directors level and above are out of touch with reality and ultimately overpaid charlatans lacking innovation, strategy or direction. The company benefits immensely by the inelastic demand for health care and the nonprofit structure of its insurance business. Prior to starting with Highmark, I had a negative image of healthcare insurers and sadly, the negativity of my image has only worsened. The bloat in this company is intense and too often the operational aspects of the business screams excess and wasteful. It continues to astonish me how a company such as this, one that is simply a middle man between patients and actual providers of healthcare, can gouge so many while offering no true or necessary product. Their existence is predicated on their ability to draw pricing power to lower cost, yet in reality, the greatest pricing power would be that of the largest possible pool of insurable people (ie the entire nation or a single payer).
