An internship so bad that I went to the hospital for a week

Pros

The benefits and cultural cache of the internship are only adequate if you have options with a significant company or a medium-sized operator. If you can make it at Hilcorp, you will be financially rewarded.

Cons

As an intern, I had no support, contact, or mentorship from any engineers, and I was thrown to the wind in New Mexico to solve an extremely complex problem. And when I did, management refused any reasonable action to attempt my solution. Further, I was debased and demeaned so heavily during a dry run with the engineers who did not have time for me that it shattered my already weak morale. I also left the last week of my internship for a medical emergency. After leaving, none of my team would respond to my messages.

Took a very substantial loss in pay (30%) when our company was bought out by Hilcorp. They sound like an Amway meeting when you interview with them. Lots of empty promises of bonuses. Haven't seen any of the big bonuses they promised that they said would make up for my wage cut. They operate as cheaply as possible, not willing to spend any money. They are like used car salesmen, telling you what you want to hear to get you to sign.
