A Hardware Company Trying to Self Software

Pros

Many of the people are great: very intelligent and talented. There's too much politics and red tape, but despite that there is a level of respect and professionalism maintained. Compensation is good, as is the work/life balance.

Cons

After the integration of Pentaho with HDS, a lot of the Pentaho team jumped ship or was laid off. There was no effort made to keep the Pentaho team around, despite the fact that HDS is now trying to sell software and the Pentaho people are the only ones who actually know how to do that. None of the Pentaho folks who departed were backfilled. Budgets, T&E, and staff were cut without explanation. There is no tangible product that Hitachi Vantara is selling as of yet. It's a lot of handwaving and lip service. There's a reason why there are no actual IoT case studies on their website.

Stay away, slowly failing

Pros

The individual contributors for Hitachi Vantara are great, but overall junior. Most individual contributors are friendly and willing to learn and share knowledge.

Cons

* Serious case of "Not Invented Here" syndrome. This occurs because engineering hours seem to be treated as free. So instead of spending $100 on software which meets our use cases, we would spend 50 hours of engineering time to create a limited version of the same tool. * The pay is significantly below average (especially true for people just out of school). There have been a number of cases where the salary for a position has fallen under the "min" section in Glassdoor. * Marketing buzzwords driving engineering decisions. * The management team will blatantly lie about how bad things are. Everything is always great despite layoffs, hiring freezes, salary freezes, etc. Pointing out reality (politely) is a great way to get yourself in the dog house. * Low level management doesn't know what it going on day to day. A lot of this stems from having a full layer of first time managers (who do not receive training). They are mostly good people who are trying hard, but are set up for failure.

Hitachi Vantara Response

Thank you for recognizing our outstanding individual contributors and our investment in rising-star engineering talent. As you know, Hitachi Vantara is currently experiencing tremendous growth and our teams are rapidly scaling across a number of portfolios - IoT, Analytics, Content, Converged, and Data Protection. This is creating a lot of leadership opportunities at Hitachi Vantara. We are working hard to promote from within and to provide our new leaders with proper training and coaching. Regarding how we compose our solutions, Hitachi Vantara uses a tremendous amount of open source software in our offerings - including open source operating systems, databases, messaging queues, analytics, & visualization. We also have very strong relationships with tier one partners that provide ERP systems, enterprise databases, and virtualization solutions. We then work to deliver high-value solutions that embrace and extend these open source and commercial offerings. Hitachi Vantara is positioned to ride some of the biggest technology waves in the history of the high-tech space - IoT, AI, robotics. We are hiring hundreds of engineers and working to generously reward our employees for their strong contributions. We are also working to ensure that every engineer, every team, every product and every portfolio is positioned for sustained growth. And, as with every successful high-tech company we also have some products that are reaching full maturity. We are working to efficiently transition engineers from these fully mature offerings to our emerging high-growth areas. We really appreciate this feedback, and we encourage you to socialize these concerns at one-on-one's, team stand-ups, and round table discussions. We would love to work with you and your teammates to resolve these challenges.

Pros

some good benefits, and "unlimited" PTO - just don't try to really use it

Cons

- MASSIVE Lay-offs. Some people get a nice severance package, some people do not get anything. Not consistent or ethical. - No Diversity - Business Units not integrated - the storage/infrastructure side & software/digital solutions side do not collaborate well, making it difficult to serve our clients. - No internal career development or advancement opportunities.
