Pros

Better than usual vacation time. Campus is well taken care of. Onsite cafeteria (although pricey). There are lots of opportunities to make improvements (just don't be too disappointed when you get shot down).

Cons

IT is a complete cluster. People don't do their jobs and end up with more responsibility. It is like a junior high popularity contest and management is included. Management does nothing here except go to meetings and track their employees' vacation time. Their is no direction. Our CIO surrounds herself with weak management that won't do the right things. The last slap in the face has been rewriting the review process where everyone is scored to look like they are barely doing their jobs - except the popular ones. The scoring is Does not meet, Generally meets, Meets and sometimes exceeds, Consistently exceeds, and Far exceeds. Even the smart and hard workers get Generally meets. How's that for a moral boost?! Just another way to only give a 1% increase! Meanwhile the Directors and officers receive huge bonuses! If we are lucky enough to get the 1% increase, it doesn't even cover the cost of increase for our medical insurance.

Pros

The flexibility of your time.

Cons

You can invest a lot of money purchasing a book of business that can be taken away by the company. There are a lot of problems in the company and the agents are trying to form an association to help protect each other and give them a voice.

Pros

I can't think of one

Cons

Technology is 20 years behind. Support for agents in the field doesn't exist. Compensation for agents is the lowest in the industry. Management will lie to your face and has cut pay for agents 2 years in a row. This is clearly not a company that is "for educator's", they care about two things, wall st. investors and upper management compensation. Customer retention is a nightmare, claims department is the worst in the industry. I struggle to find a reason this company will be in business 5 years from now. Most teachers in my area of the country do not want anything to do with Horace Mann because they have either been screwed over by them, or know another teacher who has. Agents get no benefits at all, and the pay is the lowest in the industry. Find another insurance company to work for, this one will destroy your reputation.
