Pros

Higher pay than other districts, good benefits, holidays; making a difference in the lives of kids; some campuses have good leadership

Cons

There are so many programs to implement (and they are constantly changing), data to collect and enter, and the workload creates a life where you work every evening and weekend, and feel anxious about the pending work in your down time. The new rules to minimize time wasted during routines and transitions, and to maximize more instruction time has taken away the joys of teaching for teachers (and probably students too). While it seems well-meaning to impact student learning and fill in learning gaps, in the long term will create more teacher burn out and resignation, and deprive students of spontaneous teachable moments, and social-emotional learning. The expected pace and "sense of urgency" is not healthy. HR department is hard to reach, even if you go in person.

Pros

In chaos there is opportunity. There wont be any parent support so whether a student passes or fails the parents wont come to school. Because the system is so bad and the rate of teachers leaving to never return is so high there will always be a low paying job. 60 plus days in the summer. Easy to get a job because literally no one wants to work in 70% of the HISD High Schools. IF you have nothing else going on the pay is horrible but as long as you dont wrong a kid or eally teach them for that matter; you probably can collect a check easily

Cons

No Real learning is happening No Administration support Easier to blame teachers than admit the leaders are horrible Money mismanagement across the board Poor athletics Its a true pipeline to prison system over crowded classrooms increasing special education demographics without true interventionists No one cares The schools are so bad that the district offers 10k to transfer to a hard to staff and no one takes it. No parent support. Extremely oversized classrooms. 35 - 45 students in a core class is common. DO NOT teach at HISD unless you have to take the job. Social promotion within the staff; not based on being a critical assest to the position, just if you appeared to be an ok classroom teacher. (HS LEVEL) Parents are not engaged. They literally couldnt care if their child succeeded. The average HS school student right now cant read or write passed a 7th grade level. The union is horrible. How can teachers go through so much but cant get a long term contract? Each year the aveage teacher has to wait until May to know IF they have a job. IF you start looking the chances of your retention is lower. You try to move within the district you WILL get blocked. THERE ARE NO DISCIPLINE POLICIES. I REPEAT NO DISCIPLINE POLICIES. The district caps the suspension levels. There are students that have assaulted teachers and allowed back in the same teachers room the very next day. There are students that will tell anyone I dont care about school and Im not going to class. $50/day...$9000/per student/annually.... As long as they get the attendance who cares. Teachers are proven guilty if a child accuses the teacher of anything. Why...easier to get rid of a teacher than investigate a lie. The parent has one power that scares everyone "im going to the district." Knock on the Principal so fire the teacher...I could go on

Pros

There are benefits, but too few hours to take this job seriously.

Cons

Lots of BS nepotism, blatant discrimination, slack work ethics, and so-called "management" that will lie through their teeth to protect themselves and their friends. It's hard to take this employer seriously when so much corruption exists on a daily basis.
