Don’t Do It!

Pros

I enjoyed working with some of my colleagues over the years. The pay was SLIGHTLY more competitive, but came with stipulations that aren’t worth it.

Cons

Honestly, too many to share, but I’ll try! Admin talks the talk, but cannot even try to walk the walk. Lots of hypocrisy, wasting of time in trainings that are, “do as I say, not as I do” when teachers are faced with insurmountable issues in the classroom with little to no real support. Classroom to teacher ratio. 30 + kids speaking multiple languages and not being allowed to use any translation tools to communicate with them. COMPLETE CHAOS. Honestly, I wouldn’t touch a teaching job in HISD unless you’re absolutely desperate for a paycheck.

Pros

You can get a lot of experience and make a difference.

Cons

HR needs a lot of work. POLITICAL - but, this may be shaken up soon by the new state appointment superintendent, Mike Miles... we will see. Many people that were on this political bandwagon of promoting friends, domineering people and being almost untouchable because of all their friend being at the top have left to avoid being laid off by the new superintendent. Salary - salary in some (even central office positions) is much less than neighboring school districts with MUCH less assigned. Do more with more workload = compensated less New superintendent (Mike Miles) does not respect work-life balance. After a few days on the job, he abruptly removed summer 40-in-4. Most people made plans for these off days, he does not care. He called an abrupt ( 1 business day notice) mandatory 4 day meeting that caused many teams to have to cancel or resched. events/ workshops/etc. with students & teachers. The district seems that it is about to become extremely micromanaging under the new leadership. Yes, change is needed but there are people achieving and they will be micromanaged as well.
