Thank you for caring for our patients at Houston Methodist Hospital. We greatly appreciate you rating your employee experience as 5-star! Our supportive culture and total rewards program are often cited as reasons that employees stay with us. Medical center parking is challenging. As a Houston Methodist employee, you have the benefit of free or subsidized transportation and parking. You may choose between transportation (e.g. METRO rail & bus) or parking. Pros

The company really tries to provide good benefits and good pay to their employees. As of August 2025, the system-wide minimum wage for *any* position is $19 / hr. Benefits are very good, not the best, but very good and it goes beyond the health insurance and retirement - employees get 24/7 access to fitness centers, there are numerous programs to aid in your overall wellness (mentally / emotionally and physically) and they offer tuition assistance after you've been with them for six months. The zero tolerance for workplace violence is a nice feature as well, other hospital systems in the area that I won't name, but anyone working in healthcare in Houston probably can guess, don't take the same stance in practice, though they provide lip service to it. HM is also inclusive when it comes to diversity.

Cons

If you are not a customer service oriented person, and if you struggle with abiding by certain small things (like saying "my pleasure" at the end of any interaction) you're going to struggle with Houston Methodist. They can also be very difficult to get a response from if you are an initial applicant - it took me three different times applying for the same role to get a call back - I wound up creating a new profile with a different email, as I believe the personality survey that you have to take during your application killed my first two attempts. In my particular field (security) we are working 12 hour shifts, rotating days so that we get every other weekend off. For some folks, this is great. For me, its not as great as I thought it would be. I'm used to working 12's, but on a fixed schedule. I find myself more worn out with the rotating days off, because it seems like those 2 days in a row off feel more like one and a half due to catching up on sleep, and having to get to bed early to get up early. Days when I'm working have become a rather unpleasant routine of get up, get ready for work, spend an hour commuting, work 12 hours, and hour and a half commute home (thanks to 1488's traffic), eat dinner, get very little family time, and go to bed just to do it the next day. We still work 4 days out of every week - Wednesday is our half day / change over, and we have an automatic half-hour per day as a non-paid break (which I got full pay for the full scheduled time at my other more recent 12-hour shift job, so we got 42 hours / week with the same number of scheduled hours.) I understand they went to the rotating scheduled to appease folks that felt slighted by never getting a full Saturday / Sunday weekend off, but I much preferred just working my 3 12hr / 1 6hr shift because the other three and a half days felt like I had more actual family time.
