There are still some talented and committed professionals hanging on by their fingernails to try to serve the mission of the school and serve the students. But the majority have left for their own safety and wellbeing. This is not a healthy workplace.
Cons
The leadership of the school (at nearly every level) seems to use their jobs, authority, and the institution solely for their own purposes. What's in it for me? The community college mission does not exist here. It's shameful because it is needed and could be a pillar in the community. Leadership in general does not hide the disdain they seem to have for the workforce at the school, from grounds keeper to tenured faculty. I am not referring to a lack of support (like we never get acknowledged for our hard work, or we never get raises). Leadership truly openly expresses contempt for the workforce at the school, to the point that interaction between leadership and "lesser staff" is almost non-existent. Leadership may point to some consultants that have been retained to do some "hand waving" projects which had no involvement with the workforce and no clear objectives as inclusive achievements. These projects seem to be little more than performative. I would advise anyone considering a position at HCC to have a real unplanned, unscripted conversation with an employee to ask if they feel valued. Then don't walk but run away from any job announcements, even if it looks like exactly what you want to do. Don't get on the bus just before it drives over the cliff.
