We feel sure that the employee who provided this review left Human Kinetics in 2016 (we’ve had only one person with this title and years of experience at HK). Our current CEO took office in early 2016. Since that time, many of the items that disappointed this reviewer have been addressed. Here are a few examples:
• In 2017, the CEO led the leadership team in developing a set of core values that guide our day-to-day work. Our CEO covers the values at every bimonthly All Staff meeting and emphasizes their importance in each new staff member’s onboarding.
• In 2019, HK conducted a research-based survey developed by Gallup to anonymously measure employee engagement. Scores were very high. The survey was repeated in 2021, and scores increased even further.
• In 2020 HK created a position to lead our diversity and inclusion efforts. Notable initiatives completed under the leadership of our DEIB manager include changing our recruiting and interviewing approach to make the process as inclusive as possible, bringing in a variety of speakers from diverse backgrounds and with diverse experiences to expose us to new perspectives, beginning to measure our success in meeting our DEIB goals and targets, and several others. Increasing our diversity is an ongoing priority for HK.
• Since 2020, the CEO has been evaluated by staff and the board of directors, and he gets excellent marks for his leadership. He makes sincere invitations for all staff to ask questions and share opinions, and many do.
• In 2021, the company revamped our compensation program to increase transparency in salary decisions and ensure equity across the company.
• This year (2022), fostering employee development is a strategic company goal, with the aim of making career opportunities more available.
• Our business outlook is solid. Our ESOP stock value reached its highest point ever in our most recent fiscal year as valued by a private valuation firm.
While the company has been evolving in these ways, we’ve remained committed to supporting a healthy work/life balance. For the past two summers, our staff got Fridays off for 10 weeks with no change in pay, and our plans are to continue this each summer indefinitely. We’ve adapted well to the post-pandemic work environment, allowing most staff to choose whether to work on site, remotely, or a mix, which allows for great flexibility for work to fit into everyday life. And we still have an on-site cafeteria, a gym, excellent equipment, and free coffee!
