Pros

Room for intellectual development if that is what you seek

Cons

Analysts not valued for the utilization and work that they put in. No collaboration across practices, despite that being a "value" that was introduced last year. Compensation is woefully under industry average for consultants who put in the same number of hours and produce similar work. Oftentimes feel like another replaceable cog in a machine, and no matter how much value you add to your team or practice, they don't make exceptions for exceptional people to move up even if all levels of leadership agree that you are performing above your current level. Professional development and the committees who decide your compensation/promotion are very opaque processes.

Pros

The people I work with are incredible. There is a palpable difference between them and other consultants I’ve worked with or others in industry. Huron has provided a home for me for 10+ years where I’ve been able to grow my skills while contributing to an industry that I’m passionate about (healthcare). I feel well compensated for my efforts and recognized in many other ways. Great culture, great work, and lots of happy clients in my network now.

Cons

Biggest has to be the travel, but that comes with the territory of being a consultant. We have gotten much better about allowing folks to have more flexible travel schedules in recent years, though, and you do tend to start being able to control your schedule better once you’re at the director level and above, but the typical M-Th travel can be tough. You have to just see it as a perk and treat yourself to some fun trips with all the points and miles you’ll have. Outside of that, we’ve certainly had the same kind of problems come up over the years that any firm could expect (times where we’ve needed to adapt to the market, new policies that didn’t go smoothly, etc.), but I’ve always felt like I’ve been able to help solve those problems, even when I was fairly junior. I think that’s what makes the lows feel not so low and has been why I’ve decided to stay and make a long career here.
