Pros

This is one retail company that really seems to have the customer in mind. Everything that is done is done for the benefit of the customer.

Cons

Assistant Manager position is the "crap" position of the company. You catch the crap from customer, catch the crap from employees that you manage, and catch the crap from upper store management. Hard work, very little positive feedback or learning opportunity, and retail pays squat.

Pros

The best thing about working at Hy-vee was that the people there are great to work with. They really made the job worth coming to everyday. There was always an attitude to get your work done but have fun and enjoy what you're doing.

Cons

I think that the downside to working for Hy-vee is the limits that you can find yourself hitting. Personal and professional. It was difficult to obtain a full time with benefits position because they are so limited. If you are willing to move great distances to move up then you may be more content. I had all my family in town so I was unwilling to move state to state.

Pros

At Hy-Vee, you have many ways to advance your career. Once a year, they offer a "Career Day" where they show you what you can advance to within the company. Being an employee owned store, you feel that Hy-Vee is yours too.

Cons

Pay is low for part time employees. When I started working there, they started at minimum wage. How do they expect employees to want to remain working there? The management seems to ignore problems in the store. An example is when the freezer went out, they used the band aid approach and just did a temporary fix.
