Pros

Hy-Vee has a truly entrepeneurial attitude at the management level. Store managers are given the opportunity to run their stores as if they owned them. You are also compensated well for success.

Cons

Be prepared for long hours, but that is normal for any retail venue.

Pros

A good place to build 'people skills' and learn how to interact with customers face to face. The customer interaction is usually friendly, and tips (while not technically accepted) may be presented to the employee based on performance. There are plenty of areas to train in (Meat Counter, Dairy, Customer Service, etc.) and generally mediocre compensation for the work expected. It is a good first job.

Cons

There is a lack of competitive compensation, accompanied by poor management and poor employee morale. Depending on the department, there can be a lot of personal dramatic issues and story telling. Also, there is a sever lack of 'creativity' required for any position in any department. Usually any new ideas are frowned upon unless your manager comes up with them.
