Pros

My fellow employees are generally nice people, and easy to get along with. My department manager respects me, and rewards me with free meals, raises, etc, when I do well or come in early or on a day off. My schedule is flexible, and most people treat me well. They give us a nice holiday party every year, and several company picnics.

Cons

Some managers are rude, childish, and unprofessional. One in particular talks down to everyone, makes snide remarks and acts like he is joking. He makes everyone he contacts misreable. Punishment is not doled out equally or at all sometimes. Managers only punish people who are afraid to speak up, and often just let the people who need to be talked to get away with whatever they're doing wrong. Communication between mangers and employees, and departments is terrible. Often phone calls get transferred multiple times throughout the store, because no one can answer the customer's question. This just makes the customer mad, and accomplishes nothing. Sometimes, I get so busy that I don't have time to take a break. A few times we've been so busy and short staffed that I didn't even have time for a bathroom break. I was never shown the layout of the store, so I don't know where many things are outside of my department. Employee discounts aren't very good. No one, even very incompetent workers, ever gets fired. Some managers overload night time employees with extra work, even if it isn't needed that day, don't give them enough time to finish it, and chew them out for being late. Managers sometimes treat part-time employees like they aren't intelligent or capable of reason. My department doesn't run smoothly. It is always chaotic, and many times other employees don't know what needs to be done that day. I am very good at my job, and have proven myself capable, but my input is not listened to by upper management. I can rarely get the hours I want because I'm told we only have so many allowed, but then they hire two more people I then have to train with no more compensation. I have trained 10-20 people. I often feel that managers keep me from being productive. Left to my own devices, I am a very fast and efficent worker. I am a part time employee, but can work anywhere from 20-40+ hours a week. I am shuffled throughout the department, doing different tasks, which gives me an erratic schedule. Sometimes I've had work until 8pm and had to be back at 6am or 7am the next day.

Pros

Hy-Vee offers its employees very flexible working hours. Almost all of the co-workers at this store are very friendly to work with. This is an alright place for a student in High School to work to earn some spending money.

Cons

The pay is horrible here. All non-management jobs are paid at or just above minimum wage, no matter how much experience you have or how long you have been working there. And for those that think you will be paid right once you get a management job, think again. The pay for a second assistant manager, which is what all managers start out as, is $10.00 an hour.
