Pros

Great people and talent, cool environment, resume builder. Successfully ran corporation.

Cons

Don't believe the work/life balance sell; you will eventually be pressured to work as long and hard as you would with any other company that would pay SIGNIFICANTLY more. They may even say that you'll be able to move anywhere within the company - again, this is a lie. This would only work if it convenient for your manager or Hyland. It will have nothing to do with your passions or interests. Be ready for your manager to be unqualified - most managers are, but are simply dating, related or friends with the right person that landed them that position. Pay is terrible - you'll never be able to save for a house or pay your bills unless you're in Sales. But even then, you're still going to be vastly underpaid for the industry, and then be told how lucky you are to even be there. That was my favorite part. You have to drink the Kool-Aid. If you even hesitate for one moment to express any type of excitement when they slide that offer letter across the table for less than what you were making before, or in any situation involving Hyland, you will be questioned as a "team player" and more than likely pushed out. Hyland will swear that they are innovative, that they welcome change and revolution, but nothing could be further from the truth. You are there to spin the wheel, continuing down the path that has already been created. If you want to make a difference, don't go to Hyland Software. You will leave frustrated, deterred and hungry. The worst part, you'll be expected to do it with a smile on your face. When you strip away the parties and the amenities that are largely discouraged from being utilized anyways, Hyland is like any other company. They want to minimize expenses and maximize profits. Hyland prints money, in addition to operating VERY efficiently. But you'll never know it unless you're involved in the right meetings (which you won't be). They claim your family, but will not hesitate to withhold tens of thousands of dollars from you that would obviously play a significant impact on improving your lifestyle. At this stage of their existence, Hyland is really just an exclusive clique. Sure, there's Hyland as a whole - but within Hyland, behind closed doors in the meetings and discussions that people do not see on television or in the Fortune magazine articles they campaign for inclusion, are the nastiest of cliques. An exclusive club of people that ARE making all the money, receiving all of the shares... extorting their employees for pennies while they live the life of royalty. Don't believe their hype. Overall, you might receive some decent training and mentorship. Just realize that Hyland Software isn't the end all be all that they will try and make you believe. Understand that there are many great companies out there, companies even better than Hyland. I was happy to leave Hyland and join one of them, almost doubling my pay while receiving a REAL work/life balance, casual attire, etc. Pretty much all of the same benefits that mattered to me in the first place. Hyland is just a stepping stone - for everyone else that will never be in that exclusive club. Use it accordingly, and don't forget it.

Pros

I like the flexibility in hours, the onsite fitness facilities, and the suburban location. Many of the people are friendly and hard-working.

Cons

Pay is quite low in my experience. I feel that the culture of fun and games is better suited towards young employees (which Hyland seems to prefer). Hyland needs more mature leadership and more mature, experienced people in development, testing, etc. Benefits could be far more substantial, like better medical, include maternity/paternity, a retirement plan, etc. I am often pressured to work more than 40 hours per week (with overtime pay) I am often pressured to participate in off-hours team gatherings and activities; Hyland does not seem to understand that not everyone is into these kinds of things. Any attitude short of bubbly and rah-rah is viewed as non-supportive. The statements about Values and being a family is in my opinion all smoke and mirrors.

Pros

(1) Hyland is a good place for people entering the enterprise software field to get their feet wet. During my time at Hyland I learned a lot about enterprise architecture, deploying mid/large scale applications, and working with end users. (2) The product is powerful, although I feel that the quality has declined over the past few years. (3) Given the right department and manager, some do seem to have an excellent work life balance. However, in my experience this was not the case.

Cons

(1) Hyland is notorious for poor compensation. Employees are told they are lucky because perks such as volleyball courts and arcades are included in the benefits package. However, wages are very low and when compared to other companies; perks like insurance and retirement plans are nothing to write home about. I have seen co-workers go and work for customers/resellers and earn a 40-60% increase in salary. I've also seen co-workers go to a competitor/ISV and earn a 50-100% increase in salary. (2) Hyland has a very intricate political landscape. Promotions are not based on qualifications/experience, rather who you're friends with or related to. There are a number of cases where a senior managers son or daughter report to them or a husband and wife work together on the same team. This allows for there to be a double standard amongst individual contributors. (3) The quality of the product is suffering, and innovation has stagnated. Hyland relies on a very young and relatively inexperienced workforce to test the product (mainly due to them being cheap labor). I found it shocking and extremely frustrating working around issues that arose during implementations, which could have been caught with very basic testing. Finally, in my opinion the software seemed a bit antiquated. There was no WOW/wiz bang factors that were worth sticking around for.
