Pros

None - I got to the point of having health issues (not just stress - it had gotten so serious I was physically ill knowing I had to go there everyday). I have since taken a lower paying job and couldn't be happier about it.

Cons

Everyone in a management position is part of the overall giant problem for this company. I don't know who the hell decided who gets to pick managers. But they brought in a new HR team filled with incompetence including the chief HR officer who brought along tons of pals - from some non profit so no one has experience at an insurance company - and they implemented all sorts of useless new policies and procedures. It feels these new policies and procedures were designed to ensure executives still got nice bonuses while screwing the peons as much as possible. Maybe that will work for a while, but keep doing what you're doing and you'll be screwing yourself out of your bonuses since all your good employees will be gone.

I’m glad to hear you found another job that suits you better – certainly your health and wellbeing is paramount and we wish you the best. Change was necessary at IAT. The company's historical results from our insurance operations was not acceptable – with combined ratios in excess of 100 each year. We made a number of changes, including raising expectations in terms of our target results and establishing an effective performance management system. Our Human Resources team has done a stellar job and I could not feel better about the quality of our HR team. We now provide much more constructive feedback to our employees. In the past there was very little if any differentiation in pay for performance. The majority of our employees were frustrated and wanted to be compensated for their measurable performance, not just because of their pay grade or based on what their peers earned. As a result of these changes, in 2015 and 2016, we achieved the best results the company has ever had. Combined ratios in the mid-90s - generating underwriting profit for the first time in the company’s history! We paid our largest bonus pool in 2016 for the 2015 performance year. In 2017, we paid out 30% more than we did in 2016. This pool excludes the executive team. In 2017, 80% of our employees (excluding the executive team) received a bonus. The majority receiving a larger bonus than prior years. If you did not receive a bonus, it means your performance was in the bottom 20% of the company. Yes, we’ve talked to our managers about Glassdoor reviews because it’s an opportunity for us to get feedback and also show potential new hires the exciting opportunities available at IAT. We encourage all employees to provide feedback, not just managers. Employee feedback is something we solicit at every turn. In fact this year was the second year we conducted an anonymous employee engagement survey managed by an outside firm led by Kevin Kruse. We are pleased that our overall score was 3.8 out of 5, and our highest score was in the area of Trust at 4.2. 87% of our employees responded to this engagement survey – one of the highest response rates the firm has ever seen. The most important thing, however, is that our survey results improved in 2017 over last year because we responded to the feedback we received and addressed many of the concerns our employees shared. Today, IAT is a stronger organization with better financial results and better performance in the marketplace. We are retaining and developing our staff and we are attracting some of the industry’s best and brightest talent. All is not rosy – we are still adapting to some of the changes and we are also experiencing some growing pains. But there is no debate that IAT is a company on the rise, and a successful organization needs team members who recognize that their best performance is what will move us forward and we will reward them for it! Pros

Generous PTO policy Some great people to work with

Cons

There is a lot I want to say and the last review given actually captures a lot of my same feelings. There was another review last week that mysteriously disappeared which was also spot on. The response to the “Constructive feedback” review shows you exactly who the CEO really is. He didn’t like what he heard and now that person has been suggested to find another job. Really? My decision to reply came from a hope to protect another review from disappearing. This is amplified by the fact I am resubmitting this review after determined to share confidential company information. Hmmm?

Pros

The owner is quite paternalistic and believes in supporting employees with a specific emphasis on 401k matching (7% + profit sharing). There's also a history of unexpected bonuses given to employees that have ownership's finger prints all over them. The CEO also seems motivated to do right by the employees and is invested in making it a place employees want to work.

Cons

Not a good place unless you are just starting your career or you are in senior management. There's a toxic positivity perfectly exemplified by the employee portal ("Connect" Facebook-like website). On this portal, there's an implicit expectation for employees to give effusive praise to the company and the management team. There's no space for employees who might have suggestions that might not echo management's stance in totality. In fact, any feedback that hits the level of tepid or lower is viewed as almost being insubordinate. I think some of the reviews on this site exemplify this (see the number of reviews with no cons listed). This leaves room for 2 types of feedback; public and effusive praise, or anonymous, exasperated criticism. The "great place to work" designation is often cited as proof of a healthy culture, when in reality, the culture breeds "yes men/women". I'm not suggesting that all rank in file employees are unhappy, but I think the ones who are satisfied are also generally unmotivated to grow in their careers and are happy to just fly under the radar unnoticed. This is also not to say that there are no people who are promoted from within, but the ones who do get promoted are generally defined by their willingness to embrace the mythology of "the IAT family"; not necessarily their talent level. In a nutshell, if you want a culture that thrives on innovation and employee feedback, this is probably not the place for you.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. As you indicate, me and the Kellogg family are sincerely invested in making IAT a place employees want to work and build their careers. Our investment in compensation, training and development, inclusion and diversity, and benefits like the 401(k) match, tuition reimbursement and college loan repayment program all support that. We’ve worked diligently to build an inviting, supportive, and dynamic culture at IAT. That’s why we welcome feedback regularly and consistently because we want to cultivate diversity of thought and ideas. Continuously challenging ourselves is how we progress. We hold each manager accountable for creating an open environment and encouraging their employees to share perspectives, thoughts and ideas. We proactively invite questions, anonymous or not, at our quarterly CEO webcasts. The annual workplace culture survey is anonymous and we ask for direct feedback on how we are doing at all levels of the organization and what suggestions they have for us to get better. We receive positive and constructive feedback both directly as well as anonymously. The balance of the feedback is very consistent across all channels which to me is encouraging and tells me that our employees do feel comfortable being openly constructive. I have that experience personally each time I pull small groups together at all levels of the company. We have changed and/or implemented policies because of the feedback received from employees such as timing of bonuses, parental leave policies and dress code to name a few. Our Community Forum discussions led to our current hybrid schedule because employees shared how important some flexibility was to them, understanding that we could not remain 100 percent remote long term. Employee innovation has propelled our $60 million Unity technology investment, entry into three new markets and the launch of several new products over the last three years. In fact, we believe our positive culture spurs innovation, teamwork, and agility. Is IAT the best place for everyone? No, but we will never stop striving to be the best place for ambitious, talented and kind people who embrace our vision and are dedicated to our mission. If it is not too late, I would love to hear directly from you what you are experiencing. If you don’t feel comfortable, please consider reaching out to HR to share more details on your experience. Otherwise I wish you all of the best in your future experiences. Bill Cunningham, CEO
