Pros
- There are educational opportunities that IBM will pay for in exchange for a 2 year commitment that you will not leave the company. - Good pay for VT, but 20%+ lower compared to similar semiconductor jobs in all other areas of the country; very little local job competition for technicians - Good vacation package
Cons
- Everything is procedural, presumeable so that anyone can do the task/job - Little opportunity for promotion; if a promotion is given, must give a night shift employee the opportunity to replace you on day shift, and you go to night shift; only 3 technician levels, so one could spend an entire career in one level - Work appraisals not fully based on merit, but fitted to a distribution curve that can change year to year; with 50% of the maintenance staff cut since 1993, can there still be 20% of the remaining techs rated 3? - Once an employee reaches 50% penetration in the pay scale range for his/her level, raises become 2-3% every 2-3 years, if lucky - Both morale and motivation are low; there is a huge distrust of management - Jobs are being outsourced in almost every area
